Cheap Good sockett 939 processor?

have you tried any over clocking? when you get your new card i will have a similar performing setup. i have a 939 3200+ @2.4 (i don't notice much of a difference at stock in source) 1gb of ocz's ram (2.5c) and a x850xt, given the card is slightly more powerful in css, i play at 1280 * 1024 with maxed settings and 4x aa and 16 af and i get 100 fps on nearly every map, or very close to it. source stress test averages to 89 if i remember. so if you really want a cpu upgrade, go for it. but if i were you, wait for the new card, see how it performs with your current setup and what not. ask yourself if its really worth it to spend the money on an outdated socket or just save it towards an entirely new build?

the new socket now is am2, but thats not really recommended as intel has better performing cpus around at this time.

I am not an authority on Nvidia cards, but it seems to me that you should save your money for a better card and either buy a 4000+ (~$100) on ebay or a 165 (~$153) on newegg.

If you want a noticable difference in game performance, you will see the biggest bump from a graphics card and not to be rude but your upgraded graphics card will be the big bottleneck in your system. I would recommend a 4000+ off ebay, and a decent graphics card in the range of $200-300.

Do you have an AGP or PCIe16 slot? (I'm assuming PCIe)

What is you total budget?

I will be happy to provide links to suggested products and tips on overclocking if you would like.

I personally got my 4000+ to 2.825GHz (from 2.4). Although there is a marginal difference of 5-10% frame rate boost, I could see so much more with a graphics card update.

agreed, but if hes not doing anything more than css then a 7600gt will be fine. i think he should save his money and just build a new system and reuse the 7600gt until he can afford a mid range dx10 card (8600ultra or ati's comparable card) if your budget limited, do it in baby steps like this so you can get a great computer.

no it isn't, its agp and PCIe.

what ram do you have, what are lat and what not? the key to over clocking is small steps and keep an eye on temp. at first do the fsb in 5mhz increments until you get an unstable prime 95 (time consuming but its better than 175 for a processor!) once you hit the error point (do the prime 95s for 10-30 mins until you get an error) once you get an error chances are its the ram causing it or the mobo's chip set. first add a little voltage to the ram, and depending on timings reduce them to help reduce the strain on the ram (yields better over clocks) after you get the error and get it error free again at that setting (trouble shooting whether its ram or chipset) you should start doing longer prim 95s to test for errors. thats a really quick guide but ive gotta go to bed now.

the 7600gt is a great gpu at that price. it all depends on what your going for price wise. if you want to take the next step you will be able to play newer games and play them at better settings. its all in what you want to spend (you never gave us a clear budget so i just went low to mid) a 7600gt is a great stepping stone to last for a year to wait for lower priced midrange dx 10 cards.

oh yeah forgot to say, its a way to slowly step up to a better computer, seeing as yours or mine or anyones isn't getting better by the day but worse. future games will need powerful dual core processes, but do you wanna invest it in your current system that is all but dead, or wait until those games come out, get more for the money (example would be intel's e4300 when the price gets to where they should be at 120-130) that processor is a great performer (along the lines of a 4600+ or so) but it over clocks like a champ! 3+ghz is quite attainable according to reviews so far. the 4600+ will probably get 2.6-2.8 and maybe even 3.0 if your lucky but it will perform worse at the same clock speed as the e4300.

thats quite the board. didn't see that, only saw the 939. it might be worth considering a 4200+ or so am2 if the adapter doesn't cost an arm and a leg. still wait for your graphics card to see if its worth the money for maybe not many frames or quite a few frames.

yeah dude i went all out and spent like 68 bucks on the motherboard yeah dude i found the best one they had and it was cheap as hell agp and pci e 1x and 16x 939 and am2 4 ram slots 3 pci SATA 2

With this I mananged to get 2.825 out of my 4000+ and 3.045 out of my friends. The big difference was that he had better vcore settings in his mobo bios.

What is your budget?

I don't want you to waste your money, so a graphics card will show the best frame rate improvement and I would invest decently, so you can transition over to a new computer but keep that graphics card.

A moderate upgrade to the CPU is still my recommendation, especially with you priority being counterstrike.

I am however unsure if you can use an AM2 socket CPU without upgrading to DDR2 ram. The board you have, as I am sure you know, is extremely flexible and a rare breed.

Can you give me specifics from yours bios as to your possible VCORE settings?

VCORE is a setting listed in your bois under chip/CPU/overclock settings. It is typically set to auto, but manual will allow ranges of 1.10V-1.45V some boards go much higher to 1.75V but doing so can be dangerous. Do you have speed fan installed on your computer or CPUZ?

They will tell you your current VCORE. If you give me a link to your motherboard manual, I will try to find the specifics of the settings.

With a budget of 260 I would consider you veery handicapped. I would go with an OEM or Open Box Vid Card from New Egg at arund 180 and a 4000+ on ebay or newegg depending on if you need heatsink fan.
