My friend gave me his old computer a year back and the card in it was a radeon hd 5700 and it's finally given up the ghost today. I mainly use the computer to stream movies and play a few emulators on and I don't need anything to fancy, the card is something like 7 years old at this point, and I was wondering if there was a card of equal power in the 50 dollar price range?

About right. GT740 or R7-250 would be a match for the fastest 5700 series card (HD 5770), GT730 would be about right to replace an HD 5750.
If you want the latest features like HDMI 2.0 for potential future uses, RX550 or GT1030.
There is a minimum to spend on a GPU and the GT730/R7-240 is about where I would draw the line right now. Anything less and you are spending inefficiently.
