How many people posting here actually made it down to the part where Wintek stoppedusing n-hexane when they found out it made workers ill? They found out their techniques were harmful and they discontinued those techniques, and their employees will likely get shafted on long-term healthcare...How is that different from any industrialized nation in the world? It's not. But, because Apple and Jobs are automatic headline generators, these workers are using their best hope for compensation: the PR card.

Hello guys, all of first, let’s see a profit distribution from the production of an IPAD. For an Ipad, price: 499$; LCD costs 95$; apple A4 core costs 26.8$; 16GB ram costs 19.5$; … all the hardware will cost 259.6$; that means we will pay 239.4$ extra for the manufacture fee. 230.4$ out of 239.4$ goes to apple and 9$ out of 239.4$ goes to Wintek. Wintek will pay less than 1$ to a worker who made this ipad!!!
Do you know how much salary a worker in Wintek earns for one month?? 200$ at maximum!! Here I use maximum, because you have to work mooooore than 8 hours a day. Hopefully, you get paid 200$ per month! Come on, how many touchscreens the worker has to clean with n-hexane? Let me tell you. Normally, a worker in Wintek has to clean 3,000+ screens per day, 90,000 in total in a month. Why I use 3,000 x 30 for a month? Because, Chinese workers do not have weekends and holiday! Because, they have to work longer and longer to earn money for their house. Now, you can easily get how much a work get paid to clean one touchscreen with n-hexane? 200$/90000=0.00222$.
Please don't blame me with my grammar mistakes. I’m a Chinese. If you have time, I sincerely hope you guys could correct my post and send it to liuzhencc@gmail.com. I would be very pleased to become your friend. All your kind help will be a great help to me for my written English.

What the eff does this have to do with Apple? Apple is the contractor, if Wintek or the employees' own country doesn't give a damn about them then why should a company based in California care?

Word to the Chinese. Your country does NOT give a damn about YOU at all...like, not even a bit...they consider you as a disposable. If I were in this situation, I'd call up the old Health Canada and/or the Ministry of Labour. Problem solved. See what happens when you live in democracy?

Stop writing letters to people that are NOT responsible for the health of employees and start fighting for your rights.

OMG, all of this conversation started because someone doesn't understand sarcasm.

They should write a letter to their government, Steve Jobs and Apple DO NOT WRITE LAWS IN CHINA!!!! This is really ridiculous in my view. Personally I don't like Apple or their products that much, but I can not see how it's their fault that working conditions in China are so poor. Governments write laws, not companies in other countries! Stop being an idiot and use your brain to think instead of your heart alone!
And just think, if our government weren't so hostile to business they would probably be in a field somewhere picking a crop under even worse conditions.

another worker explained, "We are unable to cope with the medical costs of treatment in the future."
wait, this is communism a higher form of socialism. yet these workers have to pay for their healthcare? what would mao do? that's ok obama care will save them. you don't have to be american to get it and you don't even have live in america to get obamacare!

[citation][nom]Belardo[/nom]Wiyosaya: Not sure you read my post right. If Corp. America degrades our workforce to sub-standard levels... then we too can compete with China, India, etc. I mean it in an insulting way in that jobs and products are sent over-seas so the company makes money. If ALL jobs (manufacturing, support, information) is exported overseas.... then WHAT is it that WE DO to make money to buy the crap we want?Guess who shot down the bill to tax companies who send jobs overseas? There is a video-article (I think its on ABC) in which they removed every non-American item out of a family house. Everything was gone! It took a lot of work to replace most of that stuff with USA items. It is said (if I remember this right) that if Americans spent 1% more a day on American products, it would generate 200,000 jobs. So if 10% more spending on American happened... that would be over 2million jobs. How about that A-Hole Gov. Walker of Wisconsin? He's a scam artist and its all about making money and money for his friends. Lets see, first thing he did - give tax breaks to business which... created the $3billion budget short-fall he's bitchin about. Those teachers gave up their money to pay for it... what a rip. This is the SAME jerk who fired all the Milwaukee city's security (he had to fight for it, and then he just simply DID it) - HIRED a UK Security contractor to replace those jobs. The city is sued for lying about the saving and reasons for the firing (illegal firing) and has re-hired all the OLD guards... with BACK pay. And because of the contract... they have to PAY the UK company money too!So much for the savings, they are already $500,000+ in the hole because of Walker... and that moron wants to do it on a state level with education?PS: because how he's moving around money in the state, he's going to cost the state an additional $30 million in debt in the next few months. Then there is CRY-BABY Boehner who says "SO BE IT", if there cutting plans will mean the loss of 800,000+ American jobs. The job loss would of course hurt the economy, taxes and in return = a LOSS of income for the country.Oh well... SO BE IT! "Your Fired!".[/citation]

I agree with what you're saying about keeping jobs in the US. I've always thought we could compete against their slave labor force if we invested in robotics and other technology.

I don't get the comparison between business tax cuts and public employee salaries though. First off any business tax just gets passed on the the customer. It really doesn't affect the business as long as the competitors are taxed the same. It only affects the customer when they pay more for the product or service. I always add in taxes when I estimate a bill for a customer. The only effect it has is increased time and expense with tax law compliance, which also gets passed on to the customer. Second business profits are personal property they don't belong to the state. A tax cut does not equal increased spending.

Everything should go to a simple sales tax. No complicated tax laws, no tax layers and accounts to hire, and no more filing paperwork every quarter. If this happened you'd see millions of jobs return to the US.

Fun see Wintek employer think the problem is Apple and not Wintek.
If work for a company, my claim is for them if I want a raise or better condition.

It's like China cry for having job given by American because China have done lowest bid. Just boost your price and Apple will look somewhere else.

Everyone have his own problem, don't push them one someone else.

Lots of Apple Haters here...

WINTEK is the company making the workers use the toxic gas, not Apple.

The workers are concerned about their health after using that crap to make Apple products. It sounds like a "Lost in Translation" issue here... they are appealing to Steven Jobs because technically, he has more power over their company than WINTEK's own bosses do, since Apple uses them as a subcontractor.

No Apple contract = WINTEK probably can't survive as a company. So, the workers are trying to get Steve Jobs to lay the smack down on their bosses, who probably don't give a damn about anything.

Trashing Apple or Jobs is just blind fanboyism from Android/Microsoft morons - both of whom, by the way, use cheaper outsourced labor ALSO to make all their products.

Stop being hypocrites.

[citation][nom]bejabbers[/nom]Apple doesn't care about people, especially it's workers? What a shocker!![/citation]

These are not apple workers genius. These are employees of a company that Apple contracts with to manufacture their goods. In fact, the manufacturing decisions are entirely based on the manufacturing company and Apple does not have any authority in "how" the product is made. If the manufacturing company decides to use this dangerous process to stay competitive, then perhaps they should think twice about it.

If, for example, I hire a company to fix my car and tell them that I only want to pay a certain price and expect the work to be done within a certain time frame, its up to that company to decide how to meet those goals and keep my business. I, in no way, decide or even have knowledge of the details of their repair process in terms of tools and work practices. I don't decide the hourly rate or what kinds of bolts they use, I simply buy their service.

I think its silly that the "big fish" is always responsible for these things. Not only do I not see Apple at fault here, but I also would argue that they cannot control the situation either.

[citation][nom]Belardo[/nom]Who cares? This is why Unions suck which prevents America from competing with China and other such countries! Those pesky worker rights, work hour limits, safety requirements, minimal pay all get in the way of progress. We also should go back to 1950s tax rates too![/citation]

I'm quite sure you are functionally retarded because the scenario you speak of might allow America to compete globally in manufacturing but it would undermine the quintessential reason our democracy stands for. If we don't protect the little guy who will? I'm not for labor unions all the time because I feel they protect worthless people because of tenure and union vestment but it's no reason to disband all of them for the sake of profits.

I hope this is an eye opener for you apple terd nuggets. Apple is neither innovative or worldly in their operations. They simply imply being that and you conformist sheep flock to buy another IPAD 2 believing that Jobs is the second coming of Christ or something.

I think it is beyond every company's scope of responsibility to try and "parent" the internal practices of other companies. It is impractical to suggest in any business environment, that the "client" is responsible for the internal practices of its business partners. Thats like me being responsible for wal-mart's scheduling and payroll practices just because I buy soap from their stores.

Completely agree. Apple should not be held accountable here and they shouldn't "pressure" their partners to fix their own business flaws. Apple should concentrate on fix their own flaws and let their manufacturing companies fix theirs. Why aren't they writing Wintek? Because Wintek doesn't care? probably. Then purhaps there should be more chinese government regulation to hold those companies responsible. Either way, its an internal issues between these employees, their chinese employer and the chinese goverment.

[citation][nom]bejabbers[/nom]Apple doesn't care about people, especially it's workers? What a shocker!![/citation]

What large corporation does? First, if they did then we would not see the degree of outsourcing that we do today. Also, once overseas then local labor laws apply and the primary objective is to increase revenue in the local economy. Remember the chemical spill in India years ago? This is nothing new, Apple is rated #21 in the list of best places to work, so it is unfair to make a generalized statement about how evil Apple is towards it's employees.

The local laws also are the ones that dictate how chemicals are handled and used. Laws in the US would never allow something like this to happen. In this case, they did quit using the process once it was discovered to be hazardous. We are often lax in working with chemicals until we discover they have an adverse effect. Remember the x-ray machines they had in all of the shoe stores in the 50's? We had no idea they were hazardous? Now we know, but how many suffered to teach us the lesson?

Hopefully, the workers in these countries will want more money, better health care, etc., and the jobs will then be brought back to the US.

[citation][nom]cpatel1987[/nom]Oh and @Aaron to your democracy comment, what makes you think South Korea has more freedoms than China just because its declares itself a Democracy? What makes you believe South Korea doesn't have these same working condition issues? If that's how you shop, well you best research what true freedom is.[/citation]

They are far beyond China. I was there in 1972 and though not perfect, conditions were better then than they are in China now.

Sounds like you folks need to Unionize. Fight the battle that has to be fought, we have had our share of revolts here in the US.

Complain about china taking the jobs, complain about unions, complain about greedy corporations and only making the top 1% richer in this miserable country and you are still missing the obvious point.

This is, and always has been, a systematic destruction of this country. This something that has been put in place decades ago. Anyone sporting an IQ of 50 and above should be able to determine that if you push all your jobs to other countries then your majority population, which is a working class, will have no jobs and no income.

The true unemployment numbers are not what your government controlled media is reporting. If someone is not receiving unemployment benefits then they are not counted in the percentage that gets reported. People are only getting 6 months to a year of benefits then that’s it. The true unemployment numbers for this country is figured to be at least 20% of the population. That means at least 60 million people are unemployed out of 300 million. At least 44 million people are on food stamps. Can we see an issue here?

Take away farming and remove the ability to be a self sufficient country and force us to import food from third world countries that have no regulations to follow. Take away blue collar jobs and give it to illegal aliens and third world countries. Take away mid-range white collar jobs and outsource to third world countries. Take away the higher range white collar jobs such as programmers and administrators and outsource to third world countries. What is being left for a true American to do for work?

Corporations are not losing money because the American worker demands safe and dependable work environments. They are not losing money because they should be held accountable for any destruction to the environment. They are not losing money for any reason they can think up. They are losing money because the upper echelon of the executives and board members are raping and pillaging every corporation that we have.

They are a tight knit group and have their greasy little fingers in every business out there. Wealth and power are not shared or distributed. There is no rising through the ranks of a corporation anymore. These over-privileged individuals are members of the same groups that only look out for themselves. Outsiders are not allowed. You do not have a chance at prosperity anymore. The American work is forced to take what they can get and not complain.

Where we are at now in this country was done on purpose. Decades ago America was a force to be reckoned with. We had an amazing middle class that actually had a lot of power and influence. This was an issue. If a country has a strong legitimate self-worth value in itself then control is not easily achieved. This destruction that we are witnessing today was planned decades ago to ensure the annihilation of the strong middle class.

If you ignore these facts and stick your head in the sand and only believe what fox news tells you then explain something to me. Why would a government allow all of these things to happen if it was not corporate driven? Does common sense not tell you that if you allow jobs to leave your country then your citizens will not have a job to go to?

The ratio between the income of a CEO and a common worker is expanding exponentially every year because outsourcing is allowed and that savings funneled into the pockets of the greedy executives and stock holders. There is not consideration or concern for the American working class that was pushed into an unemployment line for the sake of someone else purchasing a new beach house in Malibu.

These executives, stock holders and government officials are one in the same. There is no division line between them all. They either exist in all the seats of power across the corporate and political worlds or they exist to supplement each other.

And through this all there is no answer to the question of "What can we do about it?" I do not see any answer...at least any that the modern American is willing to do. Complacency is definitely not the answer but it seems to be the only thing an American citizen is good at.

Do you think that we could ever do the same as the people in Egypt or Libya? Do you think that you could ever be that type of person?

Who actually could give a continental hoot about those workers. The only thing we should worry about is having a working screen, preferably without any smudges from the workers. On a side note, to all you tree hugging hippies whining about the workers rights and how "atrocious" their work conditions are, all your bitching isn't helping if you still buy the products.

Viva cheap 'atrocious' labor!

[citation][nom]bill gates is your daddy[/nom]Complain about china taking the jobs, complain about unions, complain about greedy corporations and only making the top 1% richer in this miserable country and you are still missing the obvious point.

How is one missing the point about out-sourcing? Yes, we realize that the rich need to be taxed, but that is another issue as are the underlying causes that precipitate such. Us pro-labor forces fully understand what is going on.

You make a very flawed and untrue statement that negates your entire argument. You say: "They (being corporations) are losing money because the upper echelon of the executives and board members are raping and pillaging every corporation that we have. " Have you looked at the profits of big oil, the banks, etc.?American corporations are not loosing money as you say, they are showing record profits in many instances, and are not paying their fair share of taxes. In many instances they are getting tax refunds.

You bash us for complaining about China taking jobs, and then you go on about how out-sourcing is not leaving American's with any thing to do. I don't get it. What are you trying to say?

Yes, those of us who are current with the current events know that the unemployment numbers given are skewed, and the sources I use point that out.

Don't assume all of us watch FAUX News, also not all of us are complacent as you erroneously say.

Can we do the same as the people in Egypt? Where have you been? Look at our history, look at the current revolt in Wisconsin. We have be the model for popular revolt, whether it be violent or non-violent. What model do you think the Egyptians are trying to put in place? American Democracy.

Where are you getting your information, because you sure are off the mark in almost everything you are saying?

The planned destruction of the middle class you speak of is the consequence of decades of conservative policy. But, the American public is hip to what is going on and I predict we will see a massive change in the next few years, and the Republican's will be shoved out the door the next election. Hopefully, we will get some pro-labor, pro-middle class politicians in their place.

One last point. America has always been a power to be reckoned with, and it still is. If it was not, then why was a global economic crisis brought about when our economy went down the tank? Why are we still turned to when any military action is needed? Why are American products still highly sought? Why is American entertainment still the model of excellence? Most of the world loves us, but not all of our citizens do. Things may be more equal now on the global front, but America is still the leader of the pack and will only get better in the next 5 years...the wheels are currently moving toward such.

As a Process Chemist you need remember that the reason for n-hexane is that the film will dry faster due to its higher volatility as apposed to ethanol, isopropanol, or methanol. But if their country took proper precautions you could easily be on supplied air or wear a full face respirator. It really only causes acute disorientation under HIGH exposure. Check the MSDS.

Most chinese factories do not follow safety rules like we do in the US because it costs a few $100 per employee and the employee doesn't matter over there. Only thing that matters is product, quantity and income to those companies.

If you don't like it buy from a non 3rd world country for it's industrial products, like the US, EU, Canada, etc. But if you are like most people the extra $20-$50 / device would be too high and would turn you away.
