Chipset overheating like crazy!!!!

I just got a new mobo and is the chipset supposed to be this hot? The sensor says my mobo is 40C-50C but I can barely touch both the north and south bridges for more then 5 secs. They're sooooo hot. Is this normal? Here's a pic of my mobo- http://img.xcomputer.cz/ImgW.asp?cd=AC306e&fd=f3. The north bridge is cooled with that silver heatsink and the southbridge doesn't have anything. Newer chipsets get very hot that's not unusual. If your concerned you could actively cool it by adding a 40mm fan on top of the NB. I did it and my NB went from smoking hot to just barely warm. That Zalman cooler is good but would still be very hot to the touch, the fact is that the one that's on there is already doing it's job otherwise it wouldn't be so hot. To dissipate more heat and move it off the sink faster you should look into a fan.

Thanks, I was wondering if the chipset is supposed to be untouchable hot. There's no heatsinks/fans for south bridges though. Cause if a GPU or CPU was that hot, it would probably fry. Guess I'll just leave the chipset how it is then.

Actually I don't think the north or south bridges are that hot. I think they were hot to me because I put my finger in one spot for like 5 secs so the heat probably kept building up. Now when I try feeling them and keep my finger moving a little bit while touching them they aren't too hot.

Is there not a video card in that NB... those are almost the same boards HP(asus makes there boards too) uses. any they work just fine even when warm or HOT....

Yea it works perfectly. There is an intergrated vid card in the north bridge but I'm using a pci-e card.

lol people pannic about tempratures, computers can run at extreme temps fine (or what we think is extreme), chipset's run hot because of passive cooling, the heat is minimal but because theres no dedicated fan it gets hot but its fine with even the most minimal of air flow.

Manafacturers like MSI like putting tiny noisy fans on there chipsets - the fans die and as for the remaining little pathetic cooler remaining - now thats hot

hi all, I am a first timer here, but I just wanted to seek advice, I got a prescott chip from the US (they sent the wrong one), I asked for a northwood 3.4 ghz - compatible with my GA 8S648 FX mobo, and got a prescott, which is incompatible. I didn't know until I ran CPU Z, which then identified the chip as such. Now I have my GPU locking up during FEAR and after running speedfan saw that my northbridge is running at 102-103 celsius!!! I am waiting for a replacement board (Asus P4P800 SE) at this moment to change over but am I right in thinking it's the prescott burning my nb?

ohhh and just to add to this...i could not touch my chipset on my old AK73 socket A board...it was just that hot....but was rock solid....better case cooling makes a big difference too.

For those not worried about warrentee(that how its spelled? hmmmm) screw a 40mm fan to your chipset....i always did this to old passive geforce 2's
