Hello guys!

Could you please help me decide which PSU to get in the future? Cooler Master V Semi-Modular Series, 750W, 80+ Gold OR Seasonic M12 II, 750W, 80+ Bronze? I also checked the PSU tier list so I know that they should both be really good, but which one is better?

Full story: I recently upgraded my system with a new graphics card - MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G - and I absolutely love it, however, I have had a couple (3 to be exact) of unexpected system restarts while gaming. Two times during Far Cry 4 and one time while playing Warframe (I was really surprised about that one). All temperatures were normal.

I'm starting to think that maybe my PSU is to blame here. As you will see, it's probably pretty bad, however, I never had this problem while using my old Gigabyte GTX760 OC Rev 2.0, which, as far as I know, should draw about the same power, am I right?

Additionally, I think that I might have been charging my phone using the USB cable when the restarts happened. Could this actually be the cause? To be honest, I really have no idea how much power does charging the phone require from the computer. Anyway, I have charged my phone while gaming with my old graphics card as well and the restarts never happened. Please excuse me for the relatively long post and my English, it is not my first language.

My system:
Intel, Core i5-4670 (3.4GHz, 6MB Cache, LGA1150);
MSI, GeForce GTX 970, 4GB, GDDR5, GAMING
Western Digital, 1TB, 7200rpm, 64MB, Sata III, Caviar Blu
Crucial Ballistix Sport, 8GB, DDR3, 1600MHz, CL9, Single stick
Asrock, Z87M Pro4
Inter-Tech, 650W, aPFC, 120mm fan

Hi!
I would go with a PSU with more then 900w for powering your cards. Nvidia recommends 850w at least for SLI setups running the 900-series. I had a similar problem recently, I have two Gigabyte GTX780Ti SLI which have a custom cooling system that sucks more power then Nvidias shipping cooler 450w each to be exact. I had to buy a 1000w PSU to support my build and to have some extra power for future adventures :). Extra cooling is something that you should think about and which does use some extra power.

I would recommend Corsair PowerSupply (PSU) RM1000 1000W 80 Plus Gold or XFX 1050W ProSeries Black Edition 80+ Gold Full Modular PSU.

Good Luck!

Both choices are good.I would pick the cooler master, most would pick the seasonic. The cooler master will have better efficiency at low loads.
For just a one gpu build would 550watt already be fine, you could run sli on 750watt.If you want some extra watts when only using a single gpu have both psu's also a 650watt (cooler master) or 620watt (seasonic) version.

Did you update the bios of your motherboard? Maybe there's a problem.

Hi - It does seem that the PSU is causing your restarts. Of the two PSU's you are considering, I'd go with
the CM V750s for thew gold efficiency vs bronze and it is made by Seasonic.

The phone charging should not conflict at all with the CPU/GPU etc., different voltage rail.

Yeah, I have the latest motherboard Bios and Nvidia drivers. Thank you for the recommendations. Honestly, I was hoping that you would say that I should go with Seasonic because it is full modular meaning that I would have less wires in my case compared to the CM semi-modular, am I right?

One thing is really weird though, sometimes I can play for hours without any problems whatsoever. Games like Battlefield 4 (even the 64 player maps) and Shadow of Mordor run on ultra settings. Why is Far Cry 4 so special? I know that it might be more demanding, however, it's hard to believe that BF4 or SoM with Vsync switched off could not push the system to the limit.

In this case are you a bit correct. It seems that the V750 has all of it's pcie cables (2=4 connectors) hardwired to the psu,one cable less would be preferable. The rest do you need anyway->24pin+8pin+2xpcie(=one cable).

Does sound like the psu.You could make a log see if it gives more info,

Download the next program=hwinfo32,

http://www.hwinfo.com/download32.html

You can open hwinfo32,after that open the sensor window by marking sensors=V,after that click run,,then click at the bottom "Logging start" ,after that choose a name and place for the log.like Hwinfolog at your desktop.Leave it open and do game/stresstest or whatever you do until a crash. The log will end at that point but will be saved.

It doesn't need to be hours of data so throw it away when nothing happens.Play Far Cry 4 and see if it happens .

After the restart upload the log to a site without to much crap (!),for instance dropbox, and leave a link to it here. You could also look at the log yourself with either excel or libre office calc.

Thanks for the tips, much appreciated. Here's a link to the file that you suggested for me to upload:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/93ixa0yxicii5hf/Ruiner.CSV?dl=0

That's a really short one and also seems that you didn't stresstest when making it when looking at the temps and usage of the cpu and gpu.I assume the restart didn't happen when this log was made?
The power from the psu seems to within atx tolerances so shouldn't be the problem when looking at it as it is,but as said you didn't stresstest so as said before;"Play Far Cry 4 and see if it happens ".Only when restarting (after this) upload a log.
Also don'tmake it to long of a period, when not having a restart within the hour (maybe 2) delete the old file and reset/restart the log.

Here's a longer one, I was playing Far Cry 4 when the restart happened: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8ftwd5tuzi1cblc/Ruiner2.CSV?dl=0

I also noticed something that I thought was pretty weird - the 6-pin connector seems to have 1 empty pin (if it makes any sense) while one of the others has 2 wires (brown) in it. Is this normal?

The 6pin shouldn't be missing that pin.

Looked at that log and the +12voltrail goes down to 11.405 when the min. value according to atx specs could be 11.4 which is way to close, also going from 12V to that is a b to big of a downfall imo,so better get another psu as gekn76 and toyftw already said. You however don't need 900watts for a single gpu build which al is you can do with that motherboard you now have.
If you get this in time and are able to order from newegg is this a good option,
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-m12ii620bronze
promo code expires 1-1-15
otherwise this one,
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/rosewill-power-supply-capstone750
promo code expires 1-5-15 which gives you a bit more time.It may seem a lot 750watts,but since it's a very good gold rated psu will it still provide good efficiency at lower loads.
This one should already be fine for that build,
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-xfxts550w
The cooler master V semi modular is a good choice too,but a lot more expensive.

Thank you very much, Vic! Not sure if you noticed, but at one point (closer to the end) +12 volt rail had actually gone down to 11.299. Sadly I cannot order from Newegg since I live in Europe and with delivery costs and all other taxes applied it would probably cost me just as much as I'd pay for the same PSU in my country.

Happy New Year and, once again, thanks for the help!
