Either card is overkill @ 1280x1024. You could run max settings in any existing game with a 6870, probably even a 6850.

sapphire hd 6950 will be the better choice maybe overkill for that resolution.

it can play all games on that res with max settings.

Get the 6950, and a better monitor down the road Tom's has deals on monitors quite often. Snatch one then!
