Client/Server network setup help

hello tomshardware users and admins!

i want to setup a network with a machine that works as a server and other that work as clients.
what type of network architecture will work:
modem/router->server->switch->clients
or modem -> server -> router -> switch -> clients

will any of these work or do i need another network architecture?

another question what applications do i in my server to make this work? or can i route the modem to the router directly?

sorry if i have something not correct in the network logic here because im a starter at networking

Applications? Depends on what services you intend to offer. To be precise, from the server side, we usually refer to those apps as services because they are “servicing” one or more clients. Those clients are using various “applications” that depend on (use) those services (e.g., ftp server/service running on the server, clients using their FTP clients to access that server/service).
