Code 38 - Keyboard Not Working

Hi,

my keyboard is not working when I start up Windows XP. BUT it is working if I start Windows XP in safe mode.

I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers (including required reboots). Nothing.

I already tried disabling and enabling the device (including required reboots). Nothing.

I attached the keyboard to different USB ports. (Nothing).

Just gives me the same error message:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. Code 38"

USB in general is working (tested with both USB mouth and flash drives).

Any help is very much appreciated, thanks in advance already.

Kind regards,
Michael

Hi,

thanks for your fast reply!
I did all of the steps - the keyboard is now working both in safe mode and in standard mode.
BUT - the problem has escalated - now, when I start in standard mode, it loads up windows and after a couple of seconds (and harddrive activity) I get the blue screen that says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down" etc. - leaving me no other option than to restart.

In safe mode however it still works fine.

Below is the hijackthis log (hijackthis run IN *SAFE* MODE)

This entry looks bad.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

When you get into safe mode with networking, check the event viewer to see if the blue screen (BSOD), has logged an error (red X).
start-->run-->eventvwr.msc-->look at the system and application logs

Did you run all the steps in the malware guide (including ccleaner)?

Yes, I did all the steps in the malware guide, including CC cleaner (I ran both the cleaner and the registry fixer).

When I started up today, nothing happened. So I inserted the windows disk and installed a new version of windows on my pc. It is running now, and the old version is still on my HD, but defect and not working anymore.

I guess the best way to proceed from here is just back up my files on external drive, format my harddisk and reinstall everything from scratch?

A friend recommended me the ESET security software. In general, I am (by now) very willing to pay for security software to minimize the risk of something like this happening again. Do you think ESET is a good choice?

Thanks again.

Before you format and reinstall, try doing a windows repair while in safe mode. Often, when an infection is widespread, it can destroy system files when being removed. A windows repair will usually fix the damage. Here's a guide.
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm

While in safe mode, uninstall and reinstall your video driver.

ESET is a very reputable AV. You would have good protection. However, there is some free software that are just as good. I mentioned three of them in the malware guide (Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast, and Avira).

Hi,
I had a similar problem (erratic slow keyboard on Windows 7 64 bit) with flexnet server (LMGRD.EXE) from Macrovision
Tri to stop the flexnet service and select "manual" instead of "automatic" as starting mode
Reboot
If your keyboard is OK:
either run flexnet as a dos command or ask your provider to downgrade flexnet to a working state
Good luck
