Computer shuts off for reasons unknown.

Hey all,

Lets start with my system specs, nothing fancy.

AMD 955 Phenom II x 4 BE
MSI NF750-G55 Mobo
8 Gigs G.skill RAM 240pin DDR3 PC3 12800
GTX 570 HD 1280MB
1 x Western Digital Caviar RE WD1600YD 160GB 7200
1 x Seagate DB35.2 Series ST3160212SCE 160GB
Corsair TX750 80 Plus
1 x SONY Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache IDE DVD Burner
1 x LG Black 16X DVD-ROM 52X CD-ROM IDE DVD-ROM

I think that's all, at the beginning I would get up in the morning, and sit at my computer and I know I left it on, but it would be shut off, I thought my kids were coming by and shutting my computer down by the power button, Kids (Rolls eyes, lol). I would turn it back on and then go about my day. Well that happened a couple of times and I never thought anything of it. Well a couple of days ago I got up my computer was on, I logged in to team speak looked at the TV for a sec, looked back at the monitor and realized it was shut off, with a puzzled look on my face I hit the power button and nothing happened?? Great now what? So I opened my computer up and checked all my connections, and got my computer to power up, how? I don't know, but it didn't post. Just a blinking dash on the screen. Checked the connection to my HDD's and tried again, and got it to post and start up. After windows logs in and goes to desktop, my computer would just shut down. I can hit the power button and it will turn on but will continue to shut down.

I have had this computer together since 2010. Had only one issue since, i had to RMA my motherboard because it was auto overclocking my CPU, and would shut down when ever I tried to play any games, so I just got a new one and no issues since. Now I am having this issue and I have no idea what it could be. I put the power supply in another computer and it works well. I am using it as I type. So I figure its not the power supply. I am assuming I need a new Mobo or CPU but wanted some second opinions before I go about it. I also tried every RAM stick. No change it still shuts down.

test it with this

note: i think its your cpu(now that we know its not your psu) run that burnintest, or run y-cruncher for a while(if there are any errors it will pop up in red)

I would love to run test on my CPU but my computer won't stay on lol. Any other suggestions?

probably the power supply or your heatsink on your cpu could have came loose and is overheating and shuting off. also it could be the the thermal compound. or you can send me your computer for parts haha

its an old build that was working great before this, so I am pretty sure everything is connected wisely. I did check every RAM slot and still no change.

I think my CPU still has one year left on the Warranty, but the Mobo warranty is over. Which sucks, because I think that the mobo is my issue. Oh well, time to look for another one. Thanks for the input guys.

Unfortunately no, I have two 939 socket motherboards, one for a single core, and one for a dual core which I am using now. My motherboard is an AM3 socket so I have absolutely no way of testing it. I wish I did, that way I could try different options. I am going to run to Tigerdirect tonight and get some thermal compound and reset my heatsink and cpu and see if its not a temperature issue. If that doesn't help I will just buy a new Motherboard.

So I bought a cheap Motherboard off craigslist and plugged everything in, booted up just fine, no issues. So I will take it that the Motherboard was the issue. Just wanted to let you all know my findings. Thanks for all the help.

After my last post, I had installed the new motherboard and then powered everything on. Did a fresh install and updated drivers. I am now using the M4A79XTD-EVO as a back up mobo until tax season. I would leave my computer on and then come back later, it would be shut off again. I know again! So I figured I would check the outlet because the house is old and I know it probably needed it. That was a day ago. So today I came home and my computer had a message stating that it had an unexpected shut down??? Sucks now I have this issue. Could be driver related but I have everything up to date. So I am not sure what is going wrong. Just wanted to update and see if anyone had an idea. Thanks.

I know this is old but after trial and error it was the PSU and MOBO that were the issue. Sorry for extremely late reply.
