Question Computer started booting from HDD instead of SSD and won't change back.

For Xmas I installed a 1TB crucial SSD into my nephews computer so he can play Minecraft. I mirrored the HDD to the SSD and made it boot from the SSD. It's worked for over a month with no issues. Last night, the cat (unrelated I'm sure) stood on the power button and turned it off. Once he turned it back on it booted from the HDD instead of the SSD. The SSD shows in the BIOS and in disk management but doesn't show as a bootable drive (no little windows icon next to the disk icon). I went into the BIOS numerous times to try and make it the #1 priority but it eventually defaults to the HDD. I then removed the HDD as an option so it would only boot from the SSD and all I get is the black screen with the "please insert a bootable disk" message.

Any idea what happened and what to do??
 
Hard to believe a cat can be at fault on this one.

The first thing I'd suspect is that something have gone wrong with the SSD so that it won't boot properly.

Can you provide some health data for the SSD and post it here. See if the manufacturer have a software to locate problems, or you can use some free software such as CrystalDiskInfo. If using the latter then you do this after starting the program:
  • There is an option to view numbers in health data as Decimal numbers. CrystalDiskInfo default setting causes all numbers related to the disk health parameter (s.m.a.r.t) data to be displayed as hex numbers - but this is more cumbersome to read - like the year 2025 will display as 7E9. Me like most other are most familiar reading the base 10 number system.
  • Ctrl+C when CrystalDiskInfo main window is active - this will copy all technical info as plain text (you can paste to notepad if you want to see)
  • Paste the text into the forum.
  • Enclose the pasted text in Code - that will ensure coloumns are placed correctly and contents formatted as tables get colums put right.
 
I used Disk Genius and their video on how to clone a drive and make the new SSD the boot drive. It's worked flawlessly for a month then all of a sudden it doesn't.

Disk 0 is the HDD that it's booting off of now C:. It's also the WDC drive.
Disk 1 is another HDD not used as anything.
Disk 2 is the SSD that it was and should be booting off of now. F:. It's CT1000.

1. Redo the clone from HDD to SSD. But properly.
2. Add a boot partition to the SSD. The local expert on that is @SkyNetRising

Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Both drives must be the same partitioning scheme, either MBR or GPT
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Magician (which includes Data Migration), if a Samsung target SSD)
If you are cloning from a SATA drive to PCIe/NVMe, you may need to install the relevant driver for this new NVMe/PCIe drive.
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up

Verify the system boots with ONLY the current "C drive" connected.
If not, we have to fix that first.

Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive

[Ignore this section if using the SDM. It does this automatically]
If you are going from a smaller drive to a larger, by default, the target partition size will be the same as the Source. You probably don't want that
You can manipulate the size of the partitions on the target (larger)drive
Click on "Cloned Partition Properties", and you can specify the resulting partition size, to even include the whole thing

Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD. This is not optional.
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD


(swapping cables is irrelevant with NVMe drives, but DO disconnect the old drive for this next part)
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe all partitions on it.
This will probably require the commandline diskpart function, and the clean command.

Ask questions if anything is unclear.

The boot partition still resides on the HDD, and only the HDD, Disk 0.
You were still booting from the HDD, while the OS lives on the SSD. Yes, it can do that.
That is not correct.

Bootloader is 100MB EFI System partition.
There should be only a single bootloader.
But here we have bootloader on every HDD and SSD. This will cause complete confusion.
Some of bootloader partitions may not be functional though.

1. Fix bootloader on SSD. Execute from elevated command prompt.
diskpart
list disk
select disk 2
(select 1TB SSD)
list partition
select partition 1
(select 100MB EFI system partition)
assign letter=H
exit
bcdboot F:\windows /s H: /f UEFI
Last message should be "Boot files created successfully".
If you get any errors, then show screenshot with command output.

2. Disconnect both HDDs - physically.
Change boot priority settings in BIOS - set first boot device to Windows Boot Manager on 1TB SSD.
Make sure
Secure boot is disabled and​
Fast Boot is disabled.​
3. Should be able to boot into windows.
