Does anyone here know of any software that will allow me to convert a
3-second video clip in Quicktime format to an animated .gif file?
Freeware/Trialware would be nice, but I can probably find any software
I might need on a computer at school.
Thanks in advance,

This is not free but it has a trial and maybe you can get the job done that
way.

Many of the NLE software packages have this fetaure directly from the
timeline. In Adobe Premiere versions beginning with 5 (don't quote me) you
can use the 'Export Timeline/Movie' and then make the choice of output
format from the 'General' drop down list which includes various video file
types - Animated Gif included.

You could most likely find this same function in many of the Ulead
VideoStudio or MediaStudio versions as well. Actually I am not sure of the
VideoStudio line since I have never used these, but have used all the
versions of MediaStudio since it hit the market.

Just a tip. Animated GIF files can be made with various frame rates
depending on your needs. The higher the frame rate the larger the file and
the longer the download time to the users machine. It is usually good to use
a frame rate of 6fps for quicker downloads, but these too can become rather
large files if the video sequence is long.

My website has several animated GIF files in various places, and I use a
frame rate of 10fps particularly in our online catalog. But, in this day and
age I figure there are more and more people going to broadband all the time
and load times aren't as bad as with 56K. Although I did test the page in
our catalog on a friends machine with a 56K modem. He has MSN which claims
to be providing a 56K connection but the actual connection is only 33.6. The
page which has some 12 or more animated's on it took over 10 minutes to
load. Oh, well.

I don't know offhand if it'll handle .mov, but for free graphics software
its the gold standard.
