Yeah, I'm looking at benchmarks now. Wasn't really aware of how they compared. I had a ti4200 for a while and I found it to be incredibly dissapointing. I guess I never expected it to be the fastest in that price range.

My advice to people buying a cheap videocard? If you plan on playing lots of games? Spend more since the Ti4200 doesn't pack a very big punch.

i have a Ti4200 and i love it~~~~~~~~~ i know it's not all powerful, but it won't lag me in WC3 nor Unreal 2k3, but i fried it..... i hope PNY replaces it for me~~~

its not

if you play games with bilinear texture filtering and no aa, with texture and mipmap quality set to the lowest setting on each card, the raw power of the Ti4200 is going to pull ahead

but who does that? anyone who has a decent modern card at LEAST USES:
2xAF
highest/higher quality texture/mipmap settings (ever see the lowest mip map quality on a GF4TI? might as well put a TNT2 in cause thats how it looks)

with these settings enabled to make games look acceptable, teh 8500 is faster. i knwo because ive owned both and my hobby is messing with video cards and their setting. i AM ATI biased sometimes, but its fora reason and what im telling you right now are true facts and lean towards the ATI card because it IS actually better

edit - remember that MOST benchmarks on sites run with no AA or AF. i believe thats why the TI4200 does better. in BF1942 i HAVE to have 4xAF cause im a sniper by trade...enabling this feature drops my framerate by as much as 50%, sometimes more when theres smoke and dust on teh screen

anyone who finds out about AF would not be able to live wihtout after that

standard bilinear/trilinear looks like such crap, and actually hinders you in some games

Can we make this a stickie?
This would help so much when people come on and ask: which card should I get, or which is faster? Then we could just say, read the stickie n00b.

that's what i wish could happened~~~ Eden u have "good" connection with Fredi right?? could u ask him to make this a sticky???

I'm not really close to Fredi. I just occasionally report him some issues.

To make your FAQ work, you need a CLEAN one, very organized, AND with no replies. Contact Fredi and tell him that this thread has the unanimous opinion to have a sticky Buying Guide FAQ.

I dunno how it works to update it though, FatBurger used to have one for the RAM Forum, check it out.

CoolSquirtle, this thread is AWESOME! I have seen Benchmarks showing a Geforce 4 Ti faster than the GeForce Fx 5600 And I have read a thread about someone who actually lost 15 FPS in some of their games after upgrading their Ti 4200 to A Geforce FX 5600 (Ultra?, I forget) at Planetdoom.com. It looks like the GeForce 4 Ti 4200 is the best bet. At Pricewatch I found an MSI 64 meg Ti 4200 for a mere $80. The MSI 128 meg version was about $130 with shipping. First of all does the Nvidia Ti 4200 chipset gain any headroom with the 128 meg version? if so, then how much, and is it worth it? Now its possible to settle for another brand not on your iist of selected brands and pay only $98 dollars for a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128 MG from Inno3d or something like that. Out of these options which would be the better deal:
1. MSI GEForce 4 Ti 4200 64 meg @ $80
2. Un-selected brand Geforce 4 Ti 4200 128 meg @ $98
3. MSI GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128 meg @ $127

Thanks man!

Squirtle, I would NOT reccomend the Radeon 9200 over any Geforece 3/ R8500 card. The 9200 is basicaly an 8500 with a castrated chipset with reduced shaders, piplines, and Texture Mapping Units.

Actually you would NOT be as happy programming DX 9 with an FX as you would with an ATi. Dave can attest to that.
Dave also knows that I can get an internship with Nvidia next summer and not with ATI...

So can somebody finally tell me how the Geforce FX5200 models compare to a Radeon 9000?

didn't know about that lol~~~ can someone make sure??

and UFO the 128mb version will only perform better than the 64mg version only if it's the Ti4200-8x which supports 8x AGP, otherwise 64mb is faster than 128mb

and Eden~~ i guess this can't be a sticky, cause what are the chances that this thing is gonna be clean?? lol

Maybe it can be a "Pseudo-sticky" if everyone in the Graphics community makes a commitment to post at least once a day in this thread that "This thread is the ultimate Buyers Guide for Graphics Cards" since anandtech's last "weekly" prices update hasn't show up in over a month.

Generally any card HAS to use all its TMUs, except when the program itself requests Single or Multitexturing, or supports only one form.
