Well, recently I bought a Core i7 7700 and a Cooler Master Hyper 212X.
Now I'm monitoring the temperatures and I think it should be cooler than it is.

I'm using the HWiNFO 64 to check and log the temperatures

First the PC:
Core i7 7700 3.6Ghz (Turbo Boost 4.2Ghz)
CoolerMaster Hyper 212X
ASUS PRIME B250-PRO
16Gb CORSAIR LPX
OCZ Fatal1ty 750W Power Suply
2 HD Seagate 1Tb
Gygabayte Geforce GTX 1070 WindForce OC 8Gb

My room is at 29ºC (no air conditioning sadly)

And the temperature on idle is at about 40ºC

When I'm gaming (tested on The Witcher 2 in Ultra) it reaches almost 80ºC. Considering the age of the game and that it is not that demanding nowadays I guess it should not goes that hot.

I Noticed that the game makes my CPU works on Turbo Boost (4.2Ghz) almost full time. (I've seen the timeline graphic of HWiNFO 64)

Is that temperatures ok? (considering I'm using a cooler a lot bigger than the stock cooler)

My guess would be, considering that the Hyper 212 series isn't that easy to install, that you didn't install the cooler with enough clamping force or didn't put enough thermal paste on. It should be cooler than that. However, <80C is no biggie and I wouldn't be too worried.

Thanks for your answer!

So, I opened my case and screwed the heatsink up again to make sure it was firmly attached to the motherboard and processor (This I think it's ok).
As for the thermal paste, since the Hyper 212X shows a not that smooth surface between the heatpipes, I applyed almost the entire syringe of thermal paste that already comes with the cooler to asure complete contact. Was it too much? It's a very small syringe by the way. I believe that this is not the best thermal paste, but it was the only one I had :(

The other concern it's about the temperature reach almost 80ºC (176ºF) on an old game (2011) Do you think that on the new ones the temperature could be even higher on 100% load?

Even on this old game (The Witcher 2) the CPU seems to be running on Turbo Boost almost non stop (4200 Mhz) as the log of the HWiNFO 64 sugests. Does this means that it's running on top capacity and the temperature I'm experimenting will not be higher even on newer games?

Sorry for all the questions but I got a little concerned.

PS: I'm on summer and the room temperature beeing 29ºC (84ºF) it isn't helping too. Could this cause that high tempeatures on load? Guess I should put an air conditioner ASAP.

The less thermal paste you use the better. Small pea sized dot in the middle is all you need. You could probably do 10+ applications with that small tube they give you with the CM 212.

Are you looking at the core temps or cpu temps? If those numbers are the core temps I'd say refer to the asus link below and a response from intel with an inclination on why you probably shouldn't rely on core temps and focus on the cpu temp. You can try asking intel again for your newer 7700 model but I don't think the rational has changed.

Some boards do a bad job calculating cpu core temps. My board returns cpu core temp spikes with random shifts from 10-20 degrees over my cpu package temp which always gives a nice analog looking flow on a graph readout.

However, if the numbers you posted are the CPU temp readings at load I would say 80c is a bit high. if re-seating your heat sink and verifying the TIM didn't correct the issue you may want to see if your board has any bios updates for sensor issues. I have an older 4790k oc'd at 4.6ghz and I only hit around 52-54c under gaming load with a 29c case temp. Check out Tom's Hardware review on your 7700 chip for a better comparison if you haven't seen it yet.

Hi!

Even being an old question thanks for all the insights! I really appreciate that.

I think that the temperature of the room was the villain. It seems the hotter the air around, exponentially hotter the cooling system be. Now I have just about 22C, and the package and core temperatures are at 65C-67C under full load on stress test. I guess that it is not a big deal.

Thanks again!

Idle temps will be @10-12°C higher than ambient in most cases, but that's only a factor when ambient temps are ridiculously high or case ventilation is abysmal. If your ambient was @22° and showing idle at 40°, it's a safe bet either the cooler is installed incorrectly or there's not sufficient airflow in the case. With load temps, you'll need to look at cpu usage as a guide, if you have @ 50% usage and are in the high 60's (actually using HT threads) then temps are about right. If not using HT, it falls back on bad install or bad airflow, the temps with 22°C ambient with that cooler and @50% usage should be in the mid 50's.

For example, my i5-3570k at 4.3GHz with a h-55 liquid cooler (hyper212 equivalent) at 100% cpu usage only shows 70° at 23° ambient, idle is 33°C. Gaming loads @50% get me 53-55°C. 2x intake fans, 2x exhaust fans.

If you are showing 65-67°C with 100% cpu usage, those temps are good for that cpu/cooler, gaming loads should be in the 50's. Case fan curves will be a determining factor.

Hi, That is exactly what is happening. As I said before, the original post was a while ago (2 months+) when I was on summer with a 29C on room temperature. Now I'm on mid fall and the temperature are about 22C (on winter it reaches as low as 9-10C).

My case is well ventilled with 2 120mm fans pulling air in the front and a 120mm fan exhausting air in the back.

Now my idle cpu package and core temperatures stands at solid 30C. Gaming temperature at 55-58C, and full stress 100% load (4Ghz on all 4 cores) without HT on fluidynamics simulations (Ansys FLUENT(R)) at 65-67C.

Guess I should not be troubled anymore with these temps right? What I need now is to get an air conditioner ASAP lol!

Thanks for your reply!

Np, glad you found a satisfactory solution. TBH I'm a bit warm blooded so I usually keep my A/C around 29c throughout the summer and barely notice that much of a change in cpu temps on my 4790k. It's usually only +/- 2c coming from the winter months. But I am using liquid cooling though.

I heard Kaby lakes ran hotter but didn't realize it was that much. I probably would have been as alarmed as you were initially. 80c is about as hot as my gpu gets under full load.

i use i7 7700 too . it's quite hot cpu if compare with my i5 6500 :( .My Noctua u14s dual fan can make35-36c on idle and 65-70c while play BF1( battlefield1)
before install new cpu fan. it's 40c in idle. and 90-94c while play bf1 :(
(play in 25c atmosphere. )

When I first got my i7 7700, it also hit +80C with Hyper 212X, 35-40C idle is about normal. I went into the BIOS and set a fixed voltage (1.22v, auto was pushing 1.39v) and it hasn't gone over 62C under load since then. It's an issue with some 7700/7700K as Intel acknowledged as well.

Yep. There have been reports of those i7's running stock voltages in excess of 1.4v. That's crazy high voltage for a cpu that tops out at 1.4v after optimizations to the 14nm cpus over the prior 1.3v of the 22nm 4th gens. Bios tweaking is an almost must if possible, get core down to 1.2x levels or better at load. Just stay high enough to keep stability. I dropped my 3570k from 1.25v to 1.114v and dropped 13°C from full load temps, or about 6-7°C gaming.

I use Noctua U14S as a cooler fan and never get more than 66C.
i7 7700
VGA 1080ti
RAM 32 Corsair bus 3200.
change cooler fan may be a good idea.
