[citation][nom]FoShizzleDizzle[/nom]The Phenom II X4 is the $140 2.8GHz version running against the $200+ Intel units. Talk about a well thought-out benchmark.[/citation]
it seems relatively well thought out to me, seeing how AMD isn't currently selling a desktop processor for over $200. the purpose of the comparison was to compare these processors and AMD/Intel architectures clock for clock, not to do a price to performance comparison.

[citation][nom]Exodite10[/nom]50% better performance in synthetics with 50% more cores isn't really impressive though. No doubt this is a great processor but it's unlikely it'll be worth the premium over i7. Indeed, it could be argued that the best feature of the i9 is that the i7 prices might drop.[/citation]

50% better performance with an unrefined engineering sample without native chipset support while lowering power consumption is a major improvement for any CPU. Given 3-6 more months of R&D a proper chipset and this CPU may boast 100-150% performance increase.

Like every other Intel release since the Hyper-threading P4 there will be an extreme edition for a cool grand, then a line of 4-6 CPUs that will take the price point of the last CPU series who will drop in price to the next lowest CPU series price points.

Maybe I'll be employed again by then and will be in the market just in time for a new system. Mmmmm the sweet sweet nectar of hardware upgrades.

Good thing I didn't hop on the core i7 band wagon yet. I'll wait for these babies. My Q6600 will just have to last a little bit longer.

I'm in love with those temps! And the performance definitely warrants a second glance just to drool. As for concerns about pricing--I'm not too worried. Intel can kill off (read maim severely, I think AMD can hold on with it's hold on ATI) AMD pretty easily if it markets these chips in the $200-$300 range (and assuming AMD doesn't show up to the party when these things are released).

Ive bought AMD the last 3 upgrade cycles, but I am upgrading again next fall, and it is looking like I will end up going back to Intel; for the first time since my Pentium 3.

Wow that's really awesome. Even though the power consumption isn't all that of a problem for me.. It's amazing to see how much it uses for what it is.

[citation][nom]rsklingensmith[/nom]I have the same problem with Chrome, happens whenever they have multiple graphs/charts in a news article.[/citation]
I don't have that problem with chrome. perhaps it's because I'm using the dev version as opposed to the stable release.

That's a dangerous game! There's always something around the corner as we all know. My 286 is just fine thankyou, I'll upgrade when Moore's law dies its long overdue death. :O

Good god, second that on the temp. The low voltages are insane on this chip. I'm curious as to how it overclocks.

God, I can't get over those temps. 6 cores running colder than 2 core cpus? Does the world end now, or later?

Anyone wanna buy my i7 rig. I need more useless power. 2 years ago I started off with a Q6600, then 4 months later -> Q9550, then 3 months later -> i7 920 C1 stepping, then 4 months later -> i7 920 D0 stepping.
That was only for my nVidia.

I have an ATI rig as well. Started off with Q8200 -> then Phenom II X4 955 -> Now i7 860.

The Gulftown will be the cream of the crop. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

I'm actually looking forward to the 32nm dual cores. I don't have any need for a hex let alone a quad, not that this doesn't make me drool. I just don't do any video encoding/decoding. My PC is my HTC and gaming rig. E6750@ 3.6Ghz combined with a 9600gt. Mediocre in it's day and still fantastic in everyday use.

AMD has hexacore CPU's coming in 2010 too. Don't worry. The competition isn't going away anytime soon.

I want one but $1000 is too much. Many 1366 boards will accept Xeons too. That might be the cheaper option for a 6 core Intel.

Clock for clock comparisons are now what they were with the p4/k8/athlon days, means absolutely nothing. With Intel's turbo mode, thier "clock" speeds are marketing tools since the chip will run faster 99.5% of the time. There is a slight possibility that it CAN run that slow, but won't happen without disabling it.

I would think this could be some big ass problem for Amd,
but then again...
they'll probably sell this for like $1000,-
so that takes care of itself.....
-.-*

Of course they will, it's an EE chip.

[citation][nom]ohim[/nom]Impressive, all ppl here work in 3D mark at their jobs to be so excited about those graphs ?[/citation]
Try reading the article and see that it's not just 3DMark. :sarcastic:
