Now the only thing missing is mainstream support for multiple processors in a single motherboard.

"...AMD really needs to get a new processor out. Right now it isn't that bad, but I'm worried that there will come a point when Intel simply doesn't have any legitimate mainstream competition..."

Don't know if you guys are aware, but AMD has had 6 core CPUs out for a couple months already. Look on New-Egg under the server CPU section. They are low power/low heat for server applications but 6-core desktop/mainstream CPU's are not far off for AMD as well. So no worries if u like AMD, they were actually a little ahead this time. 😉

PS: Question...why was this tested against quad-core AMDs when 6-core are available for comparison? Maybe clock speeds or tech is too different for an accurate comparison? Well...at any rate...it would surely be a 'more' accurate comparison going 6-for-6.

@maddogfargo; If I'm reading correctly Intel has had 6 core server CPUs for over a year now.

If you want to see how Phenom II X6 will perform then take a look at i7 compared to i9. About a 50% difference because of 50% cores, give another 500-1000 due to 32nm and whatnot.

So, Phenom II X4 + 50% + 500 to 1000 = ~ 15,500

Ouch, but if you ask me, 3DMark isn't the best way to compared AMD vs Intel because I believe Intel is optimized for 3DMark a little better than AMD.

I'm hoping to see some higher IPC from AMD one of these days, rather than more cores. I'd love to go to AMD again (went from a Athlon X2 4400+ right when they released, to intel E8400, then Q9550) but it'll need to beat i7's IPC, not just have extra cores or higher stock clock. Hopefully all the hype around Bulldozer is true so I can upgrade my CPU/mobo/RAM here in in about 16 months.

[citation][nom]Kelavarus[/nom]What in the world? What 'similar system' do you presume to even be talking about? Also, as much as an ATI fan as I am, if you're going for all out top components, it's probably going to be Nvidia for the cards.[/citation]
lol good luck with that, if fermi does not impress and compete with the 5 series chances are ATI will dominate for a while even by then

People are overreacting. AMD has a six core also (the opterons). If you need that many cores AMD its cheaper since there aren't good cheap motherboards for XEONS! Yes people it's not only the cpu price that counts. Since motherboards like these with multiple sockets cost a lot and AMD is cheaper that way. Why pay the price of extreme edition you might aswell go pro.

core 12 chips will be out there way sooner than you think.

even though intel tries to stop advanced chipset makers in order to control the market but neither Intel nor any big corporaion would stand any chance in this market that people wants better & faster chips with less prices.

Very soon Intel will loose the power game & other chipset makers will take over and we see better, faster cpus...way cheaper than Intel.

AMD will stay in market for a long time, only because of their reasonable pricing and if they keep it this way.

I am an insider. I know things that you don't know.

[citation][nom]millerm84[/nom]50% better performance with an unrefined engineering sample without native chipset support while lowering power consumption is a major improvement for any CPU. Given 3-6 more months of R&D a proper chipset and this CPU may boast 100-150% performance increase.

Thought these were "supposed" to drop right in your x58 motherboard?

wow, this processor will just let AMD even more behind and farther from the crown!!! I want a I9!=D
It will be the best processor out there but really if you just play games will it be worth the money?

It will be a complete waste of money for gaming unless you play a small handful of games like FSX which crave CPU horsepower. This is a workstation/server chip.

making accusations like this is the hieght of stupidity really they are different archetectures so this message is moot

[citation][nom]Honis[/nom]Can't wait for the price to be announced. My guess $2000 because it has 0 competition.[/citation]

Your kidding, right? Power7 anyone? 8 cores per chip, 2 chips per module, 4 threads per chip, all at 4.1 and onwards GHz? That sounds like SERIOUS competition to me.
