I suspect that my (CMOS) battery in my K7S5A is going; I've had Windows XP
freeze solid roughly once a day for the last several days. The CPU Fan
Speed, System Temp, and CPU Temp all seem reasonable so I'm guessing it's
the battery.

I'd like to go out and buy the replacement without first opening the case
but I can't find anything in the manual for the motherboard that says what
battery to use. Can someone tell me what battery I need or where to look for
the answer. I've tried googling and asking a friend with the same
motherboard but I have three different answers so far so I don't know what
to believe any more.

If it don't fix it you may have to use an O/B BIOS and pump up to
138/138.This usually fixes the lost CMOS/BIOS reset.
Check here,

Daft as it is the old K7S5A runs better at these speeds 😛
Can help with BIOS update as well.See sig for email :)

If it don't fix it you may have to use an O/C(Overclock) BIOS and pump
up to
138/138.This usually fixes the lost CMOS/BIOS reset.

I really don't think a bad battery will cause freezeups. It might
cause loss of the real time clock accuracy or cause loss of CMOS
settings, but if the system does not complain about CMOS checksum
errors on power up, then the battery is probably ok. BTW, Vbat is the
battery voltage, what does CMOS setup report?

I agree with what Kyle said about a bad battery and what you'd likely
experience.

K7S5A ships with a very low quality battery, KTS. The battery the board
takes is a CR2032 (if you open your case and take it out you will see for
sure). They cost $3 at Radio Shack and actually say Toshiba, Panasonic,
Sony, etc., on them. It doesn't hurt to change it out just for piece of
mind, knowing you won't have a related problem for years.

Heat is what might normally cause your freezing problem. Have you installed
anything or done updates recently?
