CPU Advice

I've been running a 1.2 Ghz Athalon w/ 512 mb ram for a few years now and it's time for a speed bump. I have some medical bills to pay off so I want to do it on the cheap.

I use it for general computing uses, light(web) to mid-weight(print) graphic design, and, of course, 3-D gaming.

I found a AMD Athlon XP 2700+ Thoroughbred 333MHz FSB 256KB (L2 Cache Socket A Processor) - OEM (2.16 GHZ) on Newegg.com for $84.

Are there any comparable CPUs in the same price range that you might suggest over this CPU?

Also, I'm running a Geforce 4 4200 TI. Can you suggest a good graphics card that would give me a significant boost in performance for around $100?

Really you will not see much of any boost over a Geforce4 Ti4200 for only $100. Save up about $400 and ask again. An Athlon64 3000+ Venice core, nForce4 board, and a GeForce6600GT might squeaze in that budget. Seeing as you are talking about $100 for a CPU and $100 for a graphics card, you are about halfway there...

You could go really cheap and get a basic socket 754 and a Semperon 3100+ and stick with your current card, but you would be stuck with an AGP slot for upgrades. This would let you use a GeForce6600GT later when you got more money.

Thanks. I really had no idea where the 4200 lied in the whole graphics card hierarchy. I think I'll just pick up a processor now for a general speed bump.

If you buy a socket 754 you can also get a sempron CPU
