Question CPU Heat issue

Hi, I'm having some really strange issue with my CPU and its temps.

I'm running an i7 5820k with a h110i gtx corsair cooler. I built this PC back in 2015 and I never had issues with the cooler, I don't remember when it started but it's been getting gradually worse. On boot it goes up to 80-90c, if left it keeps climbing.

BUT here's the strange twist, if I open my side panel and give the tubes from the cpu block a few decent wallops it drops down to 50c then slowly rises up to about 60c idle.

I thought it may be an issue with the thermal paste being old so I bought some artic mx-4 and reapplied it today. Same issue, still happening. I'm considering buying a new cooler at this point because I honestly have no idea what's happening to it. There's no strange noises coming from it either. The pump is supposedly running at 3000RPM according to iCUE, if it's turned lower the temp raises at 1c per second up to about 70c from 60.

I'd really like to try and figure out what is wrong with it, I have no issue with buying a new one since I've had it for a few years but it's really annoying me that I can't tell what's wrong with it.

*ANY* Suggestions whatsoever please hit me with them.

Is this 100% the issue? Even though it says the pump is running on iCUE? It's not making any strange noises or anything. It still is under warranty but I contacted corsair about 5 days ago through a support ticket and still haven't heard anything back from them.
 
Squeeze both tubes coming out of either side of the pump. They should have equal pressure. While you are at it, are both tubes the same temperature? One should be noticeably cooler than the other.

The fact that you can hit it and it cools things down makes me think that the pump has an obstruction or is jamming.
 
It honestly sounds like the pump is working then. My only other though is that something is faulty with the contact between the IHS and the cooler. Maybe too much paste or too little? Did you make sure to clean off the old stuff?
 
Yup cleaned it off with the 99.9% alcohol stuff, applied paste, checked it and wasn't enough. Cleaned it off applied a bit more and it spread across it all, cleaned it and did it again with the same amount to ensure it was fully covered.
 
Yeah that's really weird. Double check that the screws are secure. My only guess is that something is wrong with the pump, and it is letting enough water through to maintain some pressure but not enough to keep up with the heat generated by the cpu. If you can't test it on another rig, then I would probably just RMA it if it is still under warranty.

• You have an intermittent flow problem due to a partial blockage, which is typical for a unit over three years old. Most AIO's fail well within that time frame.

Apart from the potential for a coolant leak, there are four problems common to AIO's:

(1) All AIO's will eventually fail. It’s not a question of if; it’s a question of when. Pumps can have component failures in the electronics that drive the impeller, which is a moving part that can wear out, so those which run 24/7/365 are prone to premature failure. AIO units are notorious for failures due to inferior pump quality, whereas custom loops typically use high-end pumps which have greater longevity.

(2) Coolant can slowly evaporate over time due to "permeation". However unlikely it may seem, coolant can actually dissipate directly through the tubes. This can introduce bubbles into the impeller chamber which can cause it to "cavitate", thereby reducing or interrupting coolant flow.

(3) AIO's are sealed Closed Loop Coolers (CLC), which unlike custom loops, are not designed to be disassembled for the water block and impeller to be flushed, cleaned of bio-contaminants and radiator sediments, then refilled. Bio-contaminants gradually accumulate over time and will eventually clog the water block and radiator tubes, thereby reducing flow and thermal efficiency. This is evidenced by Core temperatures that slowly increase over periods of several months to a few years.

(4) Also unlike custom loops, AIO's use dissimilar metals (aluminum radiator / copper water block). This causes galvanic corrosion which produces sediments that accumulate over time, resulting in blockages and flow problems. Even new AIO's may contain radiator sediments due to inadequate flushing after manufacturing. Experienced builders of custom loops will always thoroughly flush brand-new radiators. Flux, solder and metal fragments are typically found in the flush water when it's poured through a strainer.

For no apparent reason ... OR ... by simply installing, moving, tipping, handling or otherwise disturbing a NEW OR OLD unit, particles can become dislodged, whereupon the next power-up, the now free-floating particles can circulate into the impeller chamber and restrict or completely stop the impeller. Since the impeller is magnetically coupled to the stator (no direct shaft), the unit may "appear" that it's running while the impeller is restricted or stalled. "Hearing" the unit running or "feeling" vibration can be deceiving as it does not necessarily indicate flow, nor does Pump RPM in BIOS or various software utilities. Pump vibration is often mistaken for fan vibration which can "telegraph" throughout entire the AIO unit.

Without an actual in-line sensor, proper flow is difficult to confirm. Under normal operation, even with the CPU at 100% workload, there should be only a minimal temperature differential between the tubes. However, if one tube is hot while the other is cool, or the water block is hot while the radiator is cool, it indicates little to no flow. Surface temperatures can be verified with an infrared (IR) thermometer.

• Since your AIO is at least three years old, it's highly likely that bio-contaminants and particles from galvanic corrosion are intermittently impeding coolant flow as they circulate throughout the unit.

Fortunately, Corsair has a five year warranty, which much to their credit, they honor without difficulty. I suggest that you submit an RMA request for a warranty replacement cooler. In the interim, a backup air cooler should suffice. While your AIO remains in service, be sure that you don't leave your rig powered up or unattended when not in use.
