I just got back from vacation to find my PC working slowly. My HDD is in two volumes, neither over 50%. I don't have any large apps running, nothing in the system tray, and I've run my virus scan. After defragging (which didn't need doing), reducing my HDD to 30% full, and rebooting a few times the speed has come up some, but is still very slow compared to normal. My memory usage is ok, but the CPU will go back and forth between 0-10% and 100% with only a decent sized app running. Where should I start? My system's not bad either.

Athlon XP 2100+
80 GB 7200 RPM HDD
512 MB PC 2700

That's the thing. There aren't that many apps and the only one using more than 2,000k is IE, which uses 15,000k. It seems to really be all or nothing. For example when I launch IE the CPU will be at 100% for 30 seconds then go back down to almost none.

Hmmmms.
Well you can do a scan for Viruses, Trojans and spyware to start with, as well as a windows update.

I strongly reccommend the windows update as there is a nasty worm going around. Cauzes system shutdowns and sploits your PC.
