Cpu Overheating After Clean?

Hey guys so the other week i decided to do a dust clean of my whole case and components, everything went fine and i cleaned out everything in my heat sink which was the Stock AMD heatsink and the thermal paste seemed fine and i placed everything back properly and made sure the heat sink was in the right position and started up my pc after i put everything back together. I realised it was very laggy and unresponsive but i ignored that, i logged in and my fans in my pc started to rev up very loudly so i immediately force shutdown my pc just incase anything happend while shutting it down. My cousin came down and had a look at it and said most things were clean and the heatsink was placed correctly but the thermal paste was very powdery. He said everything was fine and started up the my pc, it ran completely fine as from the other day when it was laggy and unresponsive. Curios i open this app which showed me my temps and it was running at about 30-45 degrees. After when i opened some apps the temperature went straight to 80+ degrees!!!!!!!!!!, Ive basically had no pc (didnt want to do anything on it because of temps) for about 4 days now and not sure if i should buy a new heatsink because i dont get how straight after a dust clean it could be this hot!.

Any help is needed and acceptable Thanks

Did you replace your thermal paste? You have to change it every time you take the heat sink off. Remember to clean the old stuff off first

Your cousin sounds like a dangerously uninformed person...

When you replace the heatsink, you MUST clean off all thermal paste and reapply a brand new layer to ensure the right thickness etc.

Buy a tub, apply a small amount and use an old plastic membership/credit card to spread evenly and very thinly.

Make sure the heatsink side is perfectly clean (preferably using pure alcohol or isopropyl) and apply again.

So long as the temps in apps do not exceed 80 by too much it is fine. CPUS can run stable at 90+ even.

I didnt remove the old thermal paste, never knew you had to remove it every time remove the heat sink, how come you have to change it every time you take off the heatsink and im going to a computer shop tomorrow, should i just get a new heatsink, and ive had this problem before where only my fans would rev up severely but i never took notice of heat.

Thanks for answer DasHotShot, planning to go to the computer store tomorrow and get a corsair hyper 212 evo and yes i will remove the old paste. Will rubbing alcohol cloth tabs work, it has something like 73% isopropyl in it.

Yeah, should be fine. Just make sure it's nice and clean and dry before applying the new layer.

It's because the thermal paste is a conductive sealant between the cpu and heatsink so the heat goes strait to the cooler but when you take it off, it dries and cracks leaving lots of gaps for heat and air to not be cooled.

Ya as long as you replace that thermal paste you will be fine... what can happen is, when it is spread on the cpu and heatsink when you take it off, then when you place it back on, it will create even a thinner layer of thermal paste that is inconsistent over the cpu. replace that thermal paste and get a 212 evo. stock cooling sucks
