[SOLVED] CPU runs at 100% sometimes for no reason

Hi,

I've had my 8700k for over a year now. This issue has only risen recently. Now and again, the operation of windows will slow to a crawl, with lots of input lag and delay.

I will check my task manager, and my CPU will be at 100%. There will either be a "system interrupts" task using 100% of the CPU, or programs that would normally use between 0 and 2% like spotify, are suddenly using 20%.

It is solved by either restarting, or waiting for about 3-5 minutes before the CPU returns to its usual 3-5% when I'm not running a game or anything.

Any insights/advice would be greatly appreciated on how to solve this issue!

Many thanks,
Chris

Solution
Hello,

I understand that this can be a very frustrating issue, especially when everything becomes unresponsive. So, here is a quick suggestion:
  • First, launch the Task Manager.
  • Go to the Processes tab and select "Shoe processes from all users". This choice will display everything that is running on your computer at the time.
  • Now, go to the CPU header and sort by CPU Usage. From what you see on the screen, look for processes that seem to be the most demanding.
  • Once you choose a demanding program or process, right click on it and choose Set Priority -> Low.
  • Right click again, choose Set Affinity, and make sure that only one CPU box is chosen.
This should make you see the difference at once. Hope this helps!
