Well, as the topic says, my CPU temp is running about 85 C when idle, to afraid to test intensively. Case temp is about 34 C. I use a fairly generic HSF, Comp USA brand, its decent, not great, but decent. Also have 1 case fan blowing right over the CPU, and then the PSU fan. Ive tried having the case both open and closed, temp is about the same, about 2 degrees cooler when open. Room temp is about 77 F. No thermal grease yet, HSF came with some generic white stuff, but waiting to hear comments on wether to go with Artic Silver and what not.

Anyways, just trying to figure out how to cool the sucker down. At one point the bios reading was at 100 C! That was just after about 30 minutes of playing a game. Im gonna check the temp probe again, but im pretty sure its reading correctly. I figure my best options are to get a new HSF and then use some thermal grease. Also, my case is pretty plain, just the exhaust holes in the back and 2 sets on intake holes, 1 for the case fan, and another set near the PCI slots.

Any other ideas? Ill try to get a pic of my case and post it if needed.

Forgot a few key things

Athlon XP 2000
Gigabyte GA-7VRXP mboard

Everything else doesnt heat up much

Maxtor 30 gig HD, 7200 rpm
Geforce 2 mx400
256 pc2700 Kingston DDR Ram

at 85C...you should be very concern about your computer...at 100C...you should have had a dead cpu...are you overclocking your cpu?
its almost unlikely that your temps will get that high with a cpu running at stock speeds...unless you have a really, really crappy heatsink...my suggestion...check to see f your heatsnk is seated properly...if it is...then i would suggest that you get a new HSF and some arctic silver 3...becasue at those temps...you cpu wont last very long...btw...try to keep you case temps as low as you can....and make sure that you cpu temps dont go over 60C.

Dalborn,

You MUST use some kind of thermal grease, even the "generic white stuff" is vastly better than nothing.

My recommendation: Shut it down NOW before you fry that nice 2000XP. Reinstall the HSF WITH the thermal grease that come with it or leave it off until you get some Arctic Silver if you must. Tests generally show that Arctic Silver is worth a degree or two over the "generic white stuff". You've got a much bigger problem.

The thermal grease fills the air gaps that are always there between the HSF base and the CPU core. Air is a very good insulator, so almost anything is better than nothing. This is probably more important with a cheaper HSF than with a top of the line unit because the cheaper ones are not as well made and aren't as smooth and flat where they contact the CPU.

Good luck,

either go ahead and get some AS3, or use the white stuff...

Hey D,

Do not turn on your computer until you have applied some kind of Thermal grease/compound. Also since you did not know that, you should get a book on "How to build your own computer", and learn more about the functions of your components and how to install them. Before you reinstall your HSF, please go to the Artic Silver website to see how to apply the Thermal Grease. Good Luck, & I hope you are not running a old 200 watt PS too.

Peace Out...............tile

god knows your entire system setup & he would answer your questions if he could just stop laughing

90c is the top temp level,if you've survived at 100c AMD is one well made product, a top of the line heatsink is cheaper than a new processor. Danger Danger Danger Will Robinson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I think my probe wasn't reading right or something, or the Thermal grease eats 30 degrees C of the temp? Down to about 55 C idle, still seems a little warm, but much better for sure. I would be shocked if the grease made that much of an improvement, but whatever works. Anyways, any recommendations as to how to cool it down even more? Cant really make any changes to the case because of the way its built, and cant really afford much more than about $50 right now. What would be the best bet, just a new HSF? If so, which?
Edited by Dalborn on 05/20/02 11:20 PM.

It is the grease, it makes the heat transfer from CPU to HSF much better, the dramatic drop in the temperature shows you why it is a *must*. You're really lucky you didn't burn that CPU of yours!

Otherwise, I have same problem as you, idle temps about 55 degrees centigrade, case 35 degrees. After testing a couple of HSF's and several mod's to case cooling I've come to conclusion that the airflow to processor simply isn't sufficient.

In my case the PSU comes right above the HSF, almost covering it. The PSU is an Enermax, and it has an intake fan hanging over the processor, thus "stealing" some of the air that's supposed to go to HSF. PSU is quite cool, much cooler than my old one, but the system is about ten degrees C hotter (CPU and ambient alike).

I suggest you first try a better HSF, and if your CPU is also underneath the PSU, try to secure a good airflow to it (tug away the cables etc), maybe even consider a bigger case with properly arranged air flow.

Water cooling of course would do the trick, but you really need to know what you're doing and why.

To meet that 50$ spending cap, how about the Thermaltake 7+? I bought it yesterday for 35$ U.S. at a show, but check pricewatch for lowest w/shipping. Take a look here . It cools well, has a fan speed adjuster, and you don't need to take the board off to mount it. Also it can fit Intel & AMD, if you switch sides...

$1,300 for new PC + $150 for OC cooling = I get fragged smoother in RTCW

thermaltake has been making some great products lately.
and i have heard many good things about the 7+.
oh yeah, and smokey...NICE sig...HAHA...very nice.
