OK, so I bought an i7 4970k and at first I noticed a HUGE improvement over my last proc (fx 8350) The problem is it has been running really high temps (like 65* at idle) I took of my cooler (corsair h80i) that I took of my old cpu, and tried to clean it and add some more thermal paste. Well while cleaning it i must of messed it up, because it would no longer work and computer wouldn't boot. I put the stock cooler on, and at first it worked (about 40* at idle) but then the temps shot up when I rebooted. I noticed that I bent one of the connectors when I put it on (did it at 3:30am, must of not done it right) so I took it off. I also noticed that the thermal grease that comes pre-applied wasn't enough to cover cpu. So I happend to have a cooler master vortex plus in an un-opened box in my closet and I put that on, taking care to put an even thin layer of thermal grease onto the heatsink using a credit card. Now temps are like 40-55* on idle. (this is after i turned of turbo core, and turned the voltage to adaptive. I left my computer running last night and when I woke up it had shut down in the middle of the night for some reason. When I fired it up, everything had slowed down to a crawl. Literally, it took me like two minutes to open Google Chrome. Both Ram and CPU are at low usage, and running at normal speed. I was going to wait until I bought new CPU cooler (Corsair H100i most likely) and check the temps before I considered RMA. Should I RMA the chip now, or is there something else I can try?

I would be double checking your mobo to see if you have bent or fiddled with one of the seating brackets for the cooler. It sounds like the cooler just isnt sitting right on the CPU. The slowing down is probably due to thermal throttling. If you still have the stock fan that came with the i7, try putting that on and testing performance w/o overclock.

If it doesnt fix anything, RMA the CPU, and double check the motherboard for damage.

Good luck man!

Yeah I have tried two coolers now and they are both yielding same results. I've read online that many people have the same issue and heard, not definitively mind you, that these CPU's just run hot. If that's the case, I don't think RMAing either the proc or mobo would accomplish anything other than leaving me computerless for two weeks. Im not to worried as I'm still 40* or so shy of the TJ Max.

But seriously, thank you for your input it is much appreciated.

**but really, Obama??**

You're very welcome, I was just concerned by the apparent speed issues you were having. IDK, have a look through task manager and stuff, look for anything weird.

Hope I have helped!

LMAO

This wouldn't be the first time I've had that problem... but I'm a little hard headed I guess lol

**Oh, and I'm an idiot because I had a couple things installing in the background but didn't realize till after the post**
