Hello,

I recently bought used Sun Fire x2200 M2, and now im looking into upgrading the hardware.

Hours of searching around the web and reading the manuals, but didn't get the adequate answer.

So let's go to the question now. The server has 2 AMD F sockets, I have one socket populated with AMD Opteron 2210 and I'm thinking to replace this with 2 quad core AMD Opteron 2374 or 2378 CPU's. At Sun's techinical specificaions there are only models 2356/2354/2384/2376 mentioned, and there's no full CPU support list.
Also based on "Quad-Core CPU Upgrade Kit Installation Guide" a Firmware PROM replacement is required(which is provieded with Quad-Core CPU Upgrade Kit).

So do I need the pre-flashed PROM, when I don't buy the Upgrade Kit from Sun, instead I would like to buy 2 separate CPU-s from my local re-seller, will this work? Isn't just updating BIOS to the lates version enought?

I hope someone can help me... and sorry for my bad english, it isn't my native language.

i nearly have the same problem, i think, the Upgrade Kit have an Firmware-Prom included because the old x2200m2 have only 512k BIOS-Proms, do you know your Serial-Number of the unit, Sun says older then 375-..., i have 602-...
i will try an firmware upgrade today.
perhaps are in the READMEs to the firmware some more hints?

Well I figured it out already, I have 512KB PROM. I bought another Opteron 2210 so I'll forget about upgrading, since it's about 400€ and I got my other Opteron for 45$ so It is quite big difference. I think I wouldn't take the full advantage of 2xquad's.
