Question CPU Upgrade ---- Ryzen 7800X3D or Ryzen 9800X3D ?

i want to upgrade my CPU and need help to decide between Ryzen 7 9800X3D or Ryzen 7 7800X3D.
And will I need to upgrade my PSU as well ?

My current specs
CPU: Ryzen 5 7600 + Tuf LC240 liquid cooler
GPU: RX 6800
RAM: Kingston 8GB x 4
Storage: 2 x NVMe SSDs, 1 x HDD, 1 x SSD
5 additional fans
PSU: Seasonic Core 650w Gold

ASUS TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI

Kingston Fury Beast DDR5 RGB 5200Mhz

PSU about 2-3 years

I dont like 650w psu's at the best of times i would go a 850w gold personally ..

More so if using a 6800 gpu !!

The mobo will support both the 7800x3d and the 9800x3d but i wouldnt try to OC either with that board as the VRM's might not be up to it..

As for the ram cl30 6000 is the AMD sweet spot for both zen 4 and zen 5 ..

5200mhz will work fine but leaving performance on the floor by using it..

And lastly if your going either 7800x3d or the 9800x3d i would change your AIO to a 360mm at the very least ..

the 7600 non x is a easy CPU to cool , 7800x3d and 9800x3d not !!

much hotter CPUs which need bigger and better cooling !!

ok then this is my pick

Asus TUF Gaming 850W Gold
Kingston Fury Beast 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 - 6000MHz
and a 360mm AIO

now im still conflicted between 7800x3d and 9800x3d
Price diff only 50$ in my country

For an extra $50, with everything else equal, go with the 9800x3d easier to cool, faster..

The extra cache on the x3d will mask slower memory to some extent. Try it first then if you feel that you need new memory, well it’s your money.

I am running a Ryzen 9900x with a 240 aio cooler and it copes easily. In bios I pegged the max temp to 85°C. In normal use I do not hit that temperature. YMMV.

A good PSU with spare capacity makes sense.
