I accidentaly split a small amount water into my computer, it went into the CPU fan and on the CPU . I switched my computer off after a few seconds but I smelt a strong smell from the CPU .I left my PC to dry for 48 hours , after i took off my CPU fan and saw that the thermal paste had electricity marks running through it .

I also think my CPU has binded to the motherboard .My guess is that the thermal paste has mixed with the water and dripped down to the side of the Cpu where is then hardened.

My pc is only worth £500 and im pretty sure my gpu and other parts are unaffected .Should I take it to a technician to fix or just resell my gpu . Any advice is appreciated.

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS information.

Bit too premature, I think, to offer any specific suggestions right now.

If possible take a couple of closeup photographs and post here via imgur (www.imgur.com)

Worth taking some time to determine if you can salvage the situation on your own.

E.g., clean out the old paste and reapply new paste.

Photos will be helpful towards soliciting additional ideas and suggestions.

It's doubtful that water could dissolve thermal grease and make it 'flow' down into the CPU socket. In fact, if enough water spilled on the board that it flowed down into the socket, that alone would be more than enough to short out and cause damage as you describe.

It's not particularly clear what you're asking. Obviously if it's not worth repairing you shouldn't have that done. But if the GPU is still good you shouldn't sell it on unless you don't intend to replace the system. If you do intend to replace it you should be able to get a better deal on a 'bundle'....a motherboard with CPU and, if needed, memory...and then re-use your GPU in that system.
