Creative Pc DVD

I have a HP pavillion 8490 with P3 500 mhz 128 mb memory. I recently installed a PC-DvD Encore DXr2 Card for the superior sound out put. The problem is that I can't get the Creative PC-DvD Encore program to play DVD's. I keep getting "Creative PC-Dvd region error" and an explanation: "The region of inserted DVD title does not match that of your Creative PC-DvD hardware. You can only play DvD video titles that have the same region code as that of my hardware.". What does this mean and how do I till my computer that all Hardware and Dvd videos are bought in the USA?

DVD Region codes were created to prevent people from buying DVDs in a foreign country/region for less money. DVD players and movies made and played in North America is Region 1. I believe your problem deals with the wrong region setting for the player.

I beleive there are three ways to set the Region Code:
1) I am not sure with the Creative PC DVD, but with almost all DVD players, there should be jumpers located on the back that lets you choose the Region. Refer to the manual to check which jumper to set to Region 1.

2) There should also be an option in your DVD software that lets you choose the Region Code. It varies from program to program. But you should be able to find it in the options or properties settings.

3) You can downlad a free program called "DVD Genie" that lets you choose the Region Code for an unlimited number of times.*

*I believe you have only 3 or 5 tries of selecting the right Region Code. After that, the last setting will be permanent and you will no longer be able to select the region. (unless you use the "DVD Genie" program to override the settings)

1) After checking back of DVD Drive there are no jumpers designated for region code.
2) Can't find any mention in creative software to let me change the region code.
3) DvD Genie works for other programs except Creative. So I might just wait until I can buy software that has better region control codes.
Thanks

I forgot to mention another option you have. You can also change the Region Code through Windoze. I'll give you the instruction for Windoze 2000 (because that is what Im using right now), but it should also be similar with Windoze 98 & ME:

-Right Click "My Computer">Properties>Hardware>Device Manager
-Select your DVD drive(either double click or right-click on properties)
-Select "Advanced Setting" tab
-Now you should be able to select "United States," which is Region 1.
-Finally, select "OK"

There must be somewhere else I can change the region code because I am running Windows 98 and there is no advanced setting tab. So far, my best bet is looking up Hp.com. Thanks for trying.

You may try <A HREF="http://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/dvdregion/" target="_new">this</A> as a last resort. Either that or get a different DVD software.

A quick search in google, I came up with <A HREF="http://www.brouhaha.com/~eric/video/dvd/encore/" target="_new">this</A> and <A HREF="http://www.drmach.demon.co.uk/encore.html" target="_new">this</A>. Do some searching using google with the subject "creative labs region code" and you'll find your answer.

Thanks for the information. I now have creative labs DVD player working on my computer. Hp has been spared the rath of Prince Charles....

The program is called remote selector and works with Creative Labs DVD Player.
So, I'm off to watch my DVD. See ya later!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

Well, it does seem surprising that ppl haven't found this out, but here's the general deal with Region codes and your PC-DVD. You will be HIGHLY unlikely to find a DVD drive with a jumper to set the region code!. when you install a DVD drive, you get about 4 goes before teh drive is locked to any given region. i.e., you can play 3 DVDs from different regions, but on the 4th change, your drive will lock to that region. BUT you can change this. You can make your drive Region free by either patching the firmware, as with most drives, or enabling/disabling region locking via a DOS program (only with DVD drive models 1211, which my Sony 12x is. Means if it screws up I can send the drive back after enabling region locking, which is GREAT). As for DVD Genie, the settings for your hardware card are in the Hollywood+ section. If you don't know already, the Creative DXR3 is actually a Hollywood+, so basically any H+ software should work with your DXR2. If you need help on these issues, try www.7thzone.com. BTW, Windows also has region codes which you'll need to sort out if your drive is now locked to one region. There's a key in the registry, which you should try and find references too on the net as I shouldn't do EVERYTHING for you (heh) which you'll need to delete. Once you delete that key, reset and you're back to having 1 more try left. Nice eh?

BTW, once your actual drive has locked, even reinstalling WIN or putting the drive in a completely different machine won't work. It'll still be locked.

Both my Creative drive (made by Panasonic) and my Panasonic drive (guess who made that?) have region free BIOS installed, plus I have a DXR2 card with both the region check and Macrovision disabled through a little program called Remote Selector.
