Cyclic redundancy check. data error

USB 3.0 Toshiba 1tb ext drive, used as backup. During a back up, drive freezes. Now is not accessible, and gives Data Error (cyclic redundancy check). Asks me to reformat. Although its windows 7 formatted. Is there a way to fix the error and still access it? Thanks

if you can here the drive clicking or spining up and down..it may be at the end of it life.
