My Z790 motherboard only support dual-channel config and I'm currently running DDR5 5200Mhz CL36 8GB+8GB in dual channel, planning to go 32GB but is it good if I just get a single DIMM of 16GB of the same brand and specs and just do 8+8+16? Will it actually still run dual-channel because I've heard that making the 8GB+8GB as single-channel and the 16GB on another channel makes it dual ie. 8 | 8 | 0 | 16 physically.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Nope, more so in Flex mode. I'd advise on going with either a 2x16GB ram kit or stick to the 2x8GB loadout and not bother with the third wheel. If you want to upgrade to 32GB, please do not mix and match ram kits to avoid stability issues. If anything look for a 2x16GB DDR5-5200MHz ram kit. Can you please state the make and model of the motherboard you're working with? Also, what BIOS version are you on at this moment of time?
