Dead Seagate 3tb External Hard Drive

I plugged my laptop power cord into my hard drive and now it's completely dead. What is wrong w/ it and how can I fix it? I'm a newb so any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you applied too much voltage to the drive and broke it.
It may just have damaged the usb to sata converter board. You can try disassembling the drive and connecting it internally to a pc (if its a sata drive, some are pure usb and do not use a converter/bridge board)
If it works as an internal drive, you can purchase an external housing that is compatible with 3tb drives and mount it in that to get your drive back to being external.
Don't have high expectations of getting any data off of it. Many times the sata/usb board does some odd things to get these large drives to work on many different systems which makes them nearly unreadable without the same bridgeboard.

If you can upload a detailed photo of your board, then there may be an easy, no cost DIY fix.

Your PCB appears to be similar to the one in my photo clip. You will probably find that the 12V diode is shorted, in which case you should remove it. If the 12V zero-ohm resistors are open circuit, then flow a blob of solder over each of them. If there are no other problems, then you should be OK.

An alternative solution is a board swap, but this will necessitate a firmware transfer. The total cost should not exceed US$50.
