Debts?

I just noticed something on the character info ('@'-key) screen that I
never have before: Debts.

So what's that about? I guess I've got an idea of how to get in debt
(somehow ruining a shopkeeper's merchandise), but once you're in debt,
who cares? What's the deal here?

Or is this one of those fun things I have to find out myself (getting
killed by Waldo in the process)?

I have accidentally zapped an unpaid wand in a shop before and been told
" I owe the merchant guild" or something like that. After I made my
purchases, I "P"aid again and cleared the debt. I do think the
shopkeeper moved and I could have left without paying the 'zap' debt.

If you pick up anything in a shop, you'll be in debt until you either drop
it or pay it. I don't know if the debt is "erased" if you steal the stuff.

Allso if you pick up potions or food with the poison hands corruption the
shopkeeper
charges you for the damage. Same goes for wands and mana battery. I have
had massive
debt for merchants guild after robbing the casino with mana battery. When
you walk
inside a shop next time the shopkeeper says something along the lines that
you
owe x-amount of gold to the merchants guild and you are not going any where
before paying and blocks the door. funny thing is that only damaged goods
add up
to this debt. The merchant guild doesn't mind you robbing shops and
butchering
shopkeepers 😀 This has happened long time a go (pre- 1.00 ) but I think
it can
happen still.
