I am a first time pc builder. I intend on using the system for solidworks, gaming, and general computing (excel, internet etc.) I have no experience with overclocking, however i want to leave that option open in case i decide to learn later.
As of right now i have selected the following components:
motherboard:
ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131837
-or-
ASUS P8Z77-V LE LGA 1155 Intel Z77 Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131823
processor:
Intel Core i7-3770K Quad-Core Processor 3.5 GHz 8 MB Cache LGA 1155

graphics:
XFX Double D FX797GTDFC Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150632
-or-
GIGABYTE GV-R797TO-3GD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition

I am having trouble deciding if these components adequately fulfill my needs, or if they are overkill. Additionally i am trying to balance my system so that i don't overbuild in one way, and throttle the system in another.
In addition i am unsure of where to start looking for the remaining components.
HD:I was thinking of getting a small SSD (~128 G) and using my 1T external for additional storage.
Memory:Should i be getting 8 G ram, or more? Should it be 1333 or 1600? And finally should I get 8 G, should it be in 1 stick or 2? If i get 16 should it be in 2 sticks or 4?
Power supply: I was thinking modular to avoid cable clutter, but have no idea after that.
If you have a better name for my thread, please feel free to rename it. Thank you ahead of time for any insight you can offer, i very much appreciate it.
