Anyone have ideas why such a lengthy delay in shipments from Dell this
month?

Ordered an Axim X50v on the 7th, was due to ship the 9th. Nothing happened.
Looked back again today, scheduled for the 19th to be shipped.

This still shows "Pre Production" and "Order Processing". The case I ordered
with it still shows "Pre-Production" and delivery estimate the 14th through
the 16th (tomorrow).

Everything else that was ordered after for the PDA has been received or
shipped. But the Axim & the case have had no -progress- since the day they
were ordered!

Well, so much for the case. I am expecting a similar message today or Monday
saying the same thing.

Over a period of several years, we purchased three Dell computers and the
Dell Order Tracking page was wrong on all three orders. One was received
before the infamous tracking page indicated that it was even in production.
One was received six weeks AFTER the tracking page indicated it was shipped
and the third arrived in three shipments even though the tracking page and
shipment tracking indicated it had all been shipped the same day.
There have been many, many posts to this group about that order tracking
page and how the information displayed on it is just plain unreliable.
I would suggest that should Dell not keep you updated, you call the Order
Dept or Customer Care and keep after them.
The old saying---the squeaking wheel gets the grease--most certainly applies
to all major computer companies these days..

I suspect the email you received is accurate.

Xelkos,
I would bet the companies that deliver for Dell (UPS, FED Ex, DHL, are having shipping problems, because of a "GAL" named Katrina visit the US at the beginning of the month. If you are not located directly in an "affected" states, these shippers may still have trouble meeting their delivery schedules. In other parts of the US, and the rest of the world.

I can see in the following months, especially for laptops, there may be delays, because alot of the parts destined for the Tennessee's manufacturing plant from oversee suppliers, were lost/destroyed in the Southern ports. Also there will be a need to reroute ships to other ports, which will cause delays for awhile.

Nope, live in Idaho.

The handheld hasn't even shown progress in building, its been in
"pre-production" since it was ordered. Dell has no facilities in the areas
that were hit by the hurricane.

It is only the Axims that are delayed in shipping! Everything else gets
shipped on-time or sooner, and shows progress on their website. It's just
the Axims that show zero progress in building. I am not the only one who's
gotten their orders delayed up to three weeks now.

Xelkos,
The production & shipping notification interface on the Dell website is very inaccurate, the two (2) Dells (a Dim4600 & Insp1100), I ordered, were up and running for several days, while they were still being listed by Dell, as "in Production".

Did you look at the shipping details for the Axims. It states that if you add items to the basic package, additional days will will effect the preliminary ship date listed for your item. Such as a memory card, will add 10 days (business days (10+2 (weekend)=12 days) to the listed ship date. If you order the product before Labor Day, you need to add one (1) day.

Have you called Dell sales and see what the delay could be, is parts such as the memory card (if you ordered one) is causing the delay, especially if it is "Katrina" related. Or if the companies that Dell uses, are being affected, to the point that it is causing delivery to you.
