Anyone have a clue as to why this computer is such a dog? It has
slowed down since I got it a year ago. I'm betting that is caused by
those lousey XP fixes that Microsoft insists that you get.
Maybe your expected to get a new computer every year?
Maybe Microsoft is sending junk to bog down the machine so the user
gets frustated and runs out and spends another $2000 on a new machine?
Anyway, this machine is pretty worthless at this time.

Considering that the fastest Intel CPU is currently 3.2 GHz
with hyperthreading, it is not much faster than a 2.8 GHz of
12 months ago. And the Windows updates, perhaps. But just how
much RAM is installed in this computer and when was the last
time the hard drive was defragged and some system "clean up"
performed? How many new apps installed over the past year?
Also, has the computer been scanned recently for new viruses,
worms,spyware and adware?

I like to back up everything - then reinstall windows after a reformat. Then
install the latest drivers for your hardware, reinstall apps. You'll find
you get rid of a lot of junk you didn't use this way and really make Windows
snappy again. Just say goodbye to large part of the day.

Maybe he doesn`t know what spyware is, and he`s infested heavily :p

The worst case I ever saw was an almost bare install of ME (only 1.5Gb
used on the entire drive) that took 6 hours to boot up. It took every
single mouse click 15 minutes to register.

Gator was the culprit in this case, and it`d also trashed his registry.

I`ve got some basic spyware information available here:

www.phoenixbbs.co.uk

Be warned, the site is as basic as it gets - only a tiny step up from
plain text :p

Basically, follow the instructions for Spybot S&D, then move on to the
other spyware section which provides links to a couple of other useful
apps.
