I have a two year old Dell inspiron 6400. I stopped booting last night. No BIOS screen.

When I press the power button, the fan starting running, power LED turns solid green. Disk activity light turn green for a couple seconds then turns off. Battery status LED turns green for a second then turns off. Number Lock, CAPS LOCK and the LOCK with a down arrow all turns green for a second then turns off.

If I put in a CD, it starts spinning.

Pressing the power button again turns it off.

Any ideas?

Sounds pretty serious, but let's see what we can do.

First, disconnect anything you can from the notebook - network cards, CD drives, hard disk, battery, etc.

Then plug it in to an external monitor, power it from AC, and try and boot.

I just tried taking out the two memory modules and put them back in one by one and switch positions as suggested by another thread about a dead Inspiron E1505 and still no difference.
