[citation][nom]wawa sxm[/nom]i think the build quality is better aswell...i know its the same parts but you notice the difference when u sit in a toyota and lexus...everything is perfect inside a lexus imho better then mercedesi rather jap they are really reliable and thats important for me....germans are not suited for where i live...lot of bumpy roads...bmw is too hard a ride and mercedes is great and all but they keep breaking down...its like all that technology they stuff in the car isnt mature enough yet....germans do have great build quality and makes nice road going cars...ford europe is great too...its crazy that ford america and europe have such different standards its crazy[/citation]
My Mercedes experiences have been rather poor. I keep thinking every time I get in one "ok, this is one of those cars that supposed to be wicked awesome" and every time I leave my impression is "meh, at this price I'd rather have X". I will also agree with you that German cars generally do require access to a major population center for routine maintenance as you generally won't find anyone out in the boonies that has the parts or tools needed. I also think the main reason Ford Europe is better than Ford US is the BMW engineers' influence is a little stronger over the pond.

As far as build quality on the Lexus, it's generally all connected by the same number of bolts at the same points, but, yes they generally do have better quality in the small things (like better cup holders, nicer trim, better sound proofing, i.e. things people notice in the cab that makes them think 'ooo this is nice'). The mechanics however, aren't terribly different until you start spending the big bucks to buy the higher end transmission, AWD, larger engine, etc, all of which you could theoretically bolt onto a Toyota if they'd allow it.

Whats with the car analogies?

Anyway, for desktops I will always build my own but when it comes to laptops, the build quality is second to none on the macbook pros. Funnily I use Windows 7 more often than mac os x but each has their own benefits. For battery life, boot in mac os x and for everything else Windows 7.

Plus trackpad on macs are awesome.

Funny to see this.
Soo many Gates and Jobbs .
The reality .... each system as a complete package has to be viewed.
This means that the choice is always made on the complete package.

[citation][nom]smeker[/nom]Its interesting there is nothing about built quality. Both Toyota and Lexus cars have wheels, doors, seats, and engine but Lexus is Lexus.Salute![/citation]
Toyota manufactures Lexus.

If Dell wants to go after Apple's customer base or at least stem the switchers, they really need to show in black and white understandable means what Dell excels in. Practicality.

They also really need to completely change what they provide for software and go back to old school customer service they used to provide to everyone.

If all you want a computer for is homework, pictures, music and Facebook, how about an ad showing you can buy 3 Dell laptops, a 3-user MS Office 2010 Home and Student and a 3-user NOD32 for your family that does that for the price of one midrange iMac?

How about an ad showing for the same price of a Macbook Pro, you bought 2 Dell XPS laptops. One for work and one as a spare in case you lost, dropped, or spilled coffee on one?

Sure they would be lesser laptops, but when put into this perspective people think twice. Aluminum, glass and battery life is great but is not worth a huge premium to most people.

I would also love to see an ad of a Dell XPS desktop hooked up to a 50" TV playing games while someone sits there complaining most of their games won't install, run like and look like garbage on their all-in-one Fruit computer.

It's also about Dell ditches all the bloatware and adware. Ditch trials for ineffective McAfee/Norton and 30-day Office. Give people the best of what PCs offer for software and should have anyway. Bundle Office Home, 3 years of NOD32, MalwareBytes Pro, Nero or Cyberlink Ultra and Adobe Elements. If you worry about lawsuits, offer to remove these at the shopping cart online.

Then Dell should drop all the India (sorry no offence) call centers and switch all consumer calls to the very nice and smart Americans I talk to when I call HP support for their Z600 workstations. Seriously. I don't want to talk someone about my computer when I'm sure they pick up the phone for K-Mart, Telus and VISA after they hang up on me. Stop the outsourcing and hire more Americans. The economy needs it.

All this should go for HP as well. Go ahead and sell cheap junk PCs but for god sake, ditch the preloaded HP printer/scanner/camera software and switch your consumers to your excellent corporate support phone centers.

Anyway, just my 37 cents.

Actually
I bought a Toyota Kluger
I compared the Toyota Lexus vs the Kluger
There is virtually no difference in the mechanics. Just a different body.
The features were almost the same. The build quality is exactly the same.
The only difference is the Stupid price for the Lexis. rather funny.

[citation][nom]jonpaul37[/nom]well, my friend, there was recently a list that came out of 40 billionaires (including Bill Gates) who are each giving a substantial amount of their wealth to charity... Did not see Steve Jobs/Wozniak's mane on that list...[/citation]

But Steve Jobs isn't discouraging people to buy expensive products because there are people in need out there (like the above poster) now is he?

You know, I was nodding my head in agreement, thinking to myself "yeah, that's a really good job, Dell, way to stick it to the eliteists!" then, you went and mentioned two things I just totally spaced on. Display panel. It doesn't mention if it's a cheap-o TN panel or an IPS-S/H, etc. Because I'm no vision expert, I'm DEFINITELY square-center in the "90% can't tell the difference" crowd for things like color saturation, 720p/1080p at 12ft, and so on, but a TN panel and an IPS panel are like night and day! And Resolutions...I don't care what you say...1440x900 is freakin' NOTICABLE! So, I still think I'd buy a Dell still, just because of the software, but TBH, ignoring the display aspect is really why Dell shines so much!

I still don't get it where apple fans get the idea that the MacBook Pro uses a IPS panel. The MacBook Pro uses a TN panel. About the resolution, I don't know which of the screens is used in these Dell configurations. Even if they come with the weakest LCD screen with 1440x900 resolution, you can solve the problem by ordering the laptop with the 1920x1080 screen. It would cost 100$ on the Studio 15 and 150$ on the Studio 17, so the price would still be much cheaper than what apple is offering.

I was once one of the most anti-apple people out there, then vista came out and I was so pissed off at microsoft for selling me this flawed software that I broke down and let one of my friends talk me into a macbook for my next computer, and ever since then I've been a far happier person. Sure it came at a bit of a premium, but so do IPods, and I'll be willing to bet 90% of the people commenting here were quite willing to pay that premium. At the end of the day here's what it comes down to: do you want an iPod, or a Sanyo?

Don't trust Dell or Apple to compare each other's specs. Go compare for yourself. But when you do the comparison it is very important that you compare everything (things like bus speed, type of RAM). Apple's will not cost much if any more. Actually, the truly equivalent Dell typically will cost the same or more. Dell does not offer an equivalent for some things (like the track pad...apple track pads are awesome).
