[citation][nom]wawa sxm[/nom]i think the build quality is better aswell...i know its the same parts but you notice the difference when u sit in a toyota and lexus...everything is perfect inside a lexus imho better then mercedesi rather jap they are really reliable and thats important for me....germans are not suited for where i live...lot of bumpy roads...bmw is too hard a ride and mercedes is great and all but they keep breaking down...its like all that technology they stuff in the car isnt mature enough yet....germans do have great build quality and makes nice road going cars...ford europe is great too...its crazy that ford america and europe have such different standards its crazy[/citation]
My Mercedes experiences have been rather poor. I keep thinking every time I get in one "ok, this is one of those cars that supposed to be wicked awesome" and every time I leave my impression is "meh, at this price I'd rather have X". I will also agree with you that German cars generally do require access to a major population center for routine maintenance as you generally won't find anyone out in the boonies that has the parts or tools needed. I also think the main reason Ford Europe is better than Ford US is the BMW engineers' influence is a little stronger over the pond.
As far as build quality on the Lexus, it's generally all connected by the same number of bolts at the same points, but, yes they generally do have better quality in the small things (like better cup holders, nicer trim, better sound proofing, i.e. things people notice in the cab that makes them think 'ooo this is nice'). The mechanics however, aren't terribly different until you start spending the big bucks to buy the higher end transmission, AWD, larger engine, etc, all of which you could theoretically bolt onto a Toyota if they'd allow it.
