K got the 2 80 mm fans did you say i wanted them blowing air in or out of the back?
btw when cleaning out my case (dust off) what do i do to get the dust thats inside case out? ( behind everything) i mean the dust is just going to go to a different place if i keep spraying it .... do i need to get a monitor cloth or something?

You want the fans acting as exhausts, there should be little arrows on the fan to show the direction of the airflow, generally the "frame" side mounts against the case grill.
When you're cleaning, tip the box and blow the dust out. If it's gotten to the point where there's alot of it either take it outside or have a vacuum in the area.

Now to complete my collection i am looking for a pc vacuum that comes recommended 😀 something small (handheld) any ideas?

Just got done reading this thread and love all the tips you have given so far.. especially this one on the exhaust fans.. I am planning to do this next month when I can. But I have a question for you or well would like a suggestion..

I have an xps 400 and the fan on the power supply has started to make noise like it's starting to either go out or has got off balance somehow.. sometimes just hitting the side of the case fixes it. So I plan to replace it and wondered if you had a suggestion on a replacement.

PCP&C Silencer's are a pretty good deal right now
Silencer's

Any of the four would work, the Dell compatible model only lacks a switch.
If you can find a deal on the Antec EA430 it would be good as well, but $75 for me (with taxes) makes the Silencer's more appealing

how can i add rear fans to my dell xps 400. there does not appear to be any mounts and my computer is runnnig really hot. im going to be getting a new case but im waiting to get my tax returns

so if i buy a fan they will screw on to the grill with no mods? should they bring air in or should i use them as en exaust fan?

is there anyway to tell how many watts my computer is using? ive added a geforce 8400 and a wireless networking card and now a fan. im planing on adding another fan a sound card and another larger hard drive and upgrade to 4gb of ram. it currently has 2gb. thanks

You can guesstimate by using a Killawatt meter to check the wattage drawn from the wall and multiplying that by about .72 to take the psu's efficiency into account.
It's not completely accurate, but close to the average power use. It won't however show the spikes that occur.
You have nothing to fear with your configuration, the photo I provided on page 1 of this thread has a Corsair in it that was put there only to test the power supply when I received it, the machine is still running today with the stock psu.

yeah thats what i thought. will this fit in any other cases? i was reading something about it being a wierd sytle board. how did you make that side vent in you side pannel? the new fan looks sweet so thanks for the idea!!!

No it won't fit in another case.
I took the side panel out back to the shed, marked the hole for the window, cut it with a jigsaw and used double sided tape to hold a piece of plastic from an old poster frame.
Used a 3 inch holesaw for the sidefan.

You would need a 4 pin PWM fan, otherwise you will get a warning that the fan is not there.
Do a Google search for temp monitoring programs, there are are few for video, I don't remember if there were any that worked for the cpu on the XPS 400

i could not find any that would work. how to i get the one fan that is already in the case ouut? will the new one just screw right in?

Im a little confused on the memory sticks i THOUGHT that if i had 3 gb RAM my memory would be quicker with no penalties but i have a lady telling me i need 2 quantities so a total of 4gb RAM i already knew about the pairs and knew that with my current setup 4gb would be a waste meaning i would never see the full potential. I was planning to use the 2gb(2x1) module kit RAM in slots 1 and 3 and just put my remaining 1GB in slot two (leaving the 4th one empty),but shes telling me if i dont have pairs on my second one my speed will suffer.
I have an XPS 400 Pentium D (2.8 Ghz) graphic card is Geforce 9800 GT incase anyone hasnt read the previous posts which originally had 1GB of RAM and 80 GB HD i now upgraded it to 500GB HD and im still waiting on the 3 memory sticks to come in, did i make a mistake and should of ordered 4gb RAM?
