DellUser1, if I upgrade the psu in my xps400, is this a good choice? it says Dell compatible. Does it really matter that much that it fits perfectly? I see on your pic on the first page that with a standard psu I will get a 1cm gap. question is, should I go with this (only 65 after rebate) or should I invest in a Corsair for a little more money? I see the Corsair's received some awards...
I got my first real Vista crash with the stock psu and the HD 3870 and I am positive it's because of power problems when I pushed the graphics card with a stress test (it's fairly reproducible).

thanks

haha good idea thanx man

I have a bunch in my basement :). Newegg's shipping cost for the $2 item is $6, outrageous - unless you order in bulk.
If you live in the US we can arrange sth. if you like

yeah that is outragious. i think i will hold off because when i get my tax returns i will be buying a new case and mobo. im gonna buy the antecs skeleton case and a nforce 750i. anyone use either of these before? the only thing im conserned about is installing a new mobo. ive heard some people say that setting it up right is hard? any tips? derausgewanderte, i live in wisconsin. are you sellin any of those on ebay? like i said i might just hold off. im running pretty cool right now but i hate having a fan not running

I would have said to build the machine outside of the case but that's pretty much what you're doing with the Skeleton anyway.

not sure if you see my email from here (derausgewanderte@gmail.com). send me an email with your address and I can ship you one. we talk about cost in the email but shouldn't be more than 2 bucks with regular mail total. you can pay via my paypal account. Not worth putting these on ebay unless I have 100 of them 😉

you seem like an honset guy but would you be willing to just put one on ebay? id rather not mess around doing it this way. i know its only a couple bucks but you know how parents are.lol. theres no way they would let me do it that way, sorry.

how about I just send it to you and if you feel like it you can pay either by sending me two dollar bills by snail mail or using paypal. there are fees associated for the seller putting it on ebay - really not worth it.
another option may be a local small Computer repair shop in your area. You know the kind of store where you ask yourself how the hack they are still in business. they probably have them in stock. look in your local telephone book for stores and make a few calls.

will the dell psu work with other mobos? iv heard that they are wired defferently. i dont think thats true but just want to make sure

It certainly used to be that way (I had a Dell Dim4100 once). Since I can put a non-Dell psu into my xps400, I am sure that the one that's in there will also work on other mobos. Mine goes to ebay once I get the new one. Just ordered it. The one problem you may encounter is the size of the Dell psu. It's about a centimeter taller than others (look at DellUser1's post on first page).

yeah i saw that. i dont think that should be a problem becausse im getting a skeleton case, i can always mount it on the outside. have you ever installed a new mobo? is it harrd to set it up right? i dont mean connecting it to the case and all i mean setting it up the first time.

many times :), but there are tons of step by step instructions online how to do it. It's really not difficult if you have the correct components.
look here, but there are hundreds of other pages and I am sure there are better ones.

edit1: a few hours probably. but I got lazy in the last two years and just bought complete systems. No pictures. I currently have the XPS400 which is already way outdated. I will wait until next year and then buy a new i7 cpu system. let's not clutter this thread and stick to the topic.

Personally, I would keep it, you never know if you'll need a backup or you may want to pass the Dell to someone and take your upgraded unit with you.

very true, I will probably take that advise.

nahh, no pictures, I take pictures of my kids, there are more important things in life 😀
