I have a question about upgrading ram in my Dell XPS.

I have one gig of memory now (512 x 2) and would like to bump up and past 2 gb in anticipation of Vista once it becomes stable.

Now I have this type of memory in my machine now...
PC2-5300/667 MHz DDR2 240-pin DIMM

I have 4 slots and looked into a 2GB (1gb DIMM x2) for my upgrade.

Now my friend claims its not practical to move up to 3 gb cause Vista barely supports that. I am thinking long term if I can go to Vista 64bit when its stable and have 3gb of ram. He claims down the road I could go with faster speed ram but this will make me have to buy a full 3 to 4 gb of ram to replace my current 1 gb with faster speed ram.

My question is it more practical to wait and stay on 1 gb or should I go to 3 gb for $150 and be fine for a long time. I am torn with also just going up to 2gb for $70. Thoughts? Is it worth it, would a ram speed difference even work in my XPS? I know Dell locks down the bios so you can't overclock....HELP!

Anyone give me a little insight on if I should go to 3 gb's or will it just hurt XP and Vista more than its worth?

I'm running vista on my system and it runs great on 2 gig. I really don't see any reason to go higher then 2 gigs for quite a while. My suggestion to you is to sell off your ram and get a 2 gig kit of ddr2 800.

My Dell will only do 667 mhz I don't believe I can do 800 mhz. Maybe I am wrong? Its the style before the current XPS design the top of the line tower.

I meant I would buy 2 gb kit and get to 3 gb total in anticipation of Vista 64 bit which I do have along with the 32 bit already....waiting on SLI supported Nvidia driver with the 7 Series cards.
