grab a stick and hit it until its even more dead.

seriously: if you want a hint more specific, you should be more specific
too - whats your character class, level...?

Try a +10 weapon of your choice.
Try lots of elemental resistance (fire first), you also should have some
spells granting you that.
Try Valen, he's kinda handy against that guy.
Try buffing your animal companion with all those special spells you got -
extra magic damage etc, very useful.

Oh I could use some advice here too. Just got up to the lich and it's
really starting to give me the sh*ts. I've found throwing holy water at
him does some damage to start with, but not enough to help much. Also
tried the usual gamut of scrolls etc (i.e. greater dispelling, fireball,
etc) to no avail. Bought a warhammer for the drow to try the bludgeoning
approach and beefed it up a bit with some spells, that didn't do a whole
lot either.

I'm playing a Bard/Fighter/Arcane Archer, levels 8/5/8, with Deekin and
(can't remember her name) the female drow.

I'm nearly at the point where I"m just going to move on, and I HATE
doing that.

Basically, I would recommend you a +10 weapon, cause they pierce through the
demiliches 20/+10 damage reduction (I'm not quite shure if that's possible
with bows, as they do not have a real enchantment bonus, but definitely
worth a try). You also could try out a +9 weapon and then bless it via
potion of bless.
Use your AAs fire arrows, they at least have a chance to do some decent
extra damage through his 20/- fire resistance.
As for your henchmen, Deekin should be useless xcept for some healing. The
drow might be of use if you leveled her as a mage, let her buff you up,
especially elemental resistances. As a rogue/assassin, shes pretty useless.

Maybe I was lucky, but using my Bard, FOD took him down in one.

I wouldn't throw scrolls at him. They probably won't do much
of anything.

He's got a lot of SR and scrolls are generally at the minimum
level needed to cast the spell--they're not going to do much about
getting through.

Given your levels I doubt you can hit him with spells very
well, either.

Erm. Neither can a (single classed) Bard cast Finger of Death, nor is the
Demi-Lich vulnerable to that spell. He is immune to all spells of grade 9 or
less, which is equal to "immune to all spells".

He's not immune. In fact, once I killed him with spells
alone--admittedly with a higher level character than normal. (I took
my wizard/thief that had completed HotU and went back through--no
allies.)

Bards can cast from arcane scrolls, so could conceivable cast FoD. The
second point still applies. My pally took him down with one hit from Lay
on Hands, so he's not immune to spell-like special abilities.

Hmm...You took your level 28-something and started HOTU again? That
must've been boring to the extreme ;-)

No--it was challenging. Note the qualification: No allies.
Sure, you can summon stuff (and you have to--there are spell-immune
monsters) but what you summon is rather wimpy. Whatever their
firepower, they have low AC and rarely last more than a few rounds.

Indeed! I certainly don't play (computer) games to get frustrated by
difficulty... Sometimes it's fun to let out some steam and wipe the
floor with "weaker" foes.

My Bard, (or Deekin) definately took him out in one go. Maybe
I'm wrong about the spell, but it was 100% from a scroll.
