Hello Everyone
I have a setup with a leased line (1 gig) coming through a firewall (cisco meraki) on a network of about 30 PCs.
Most are working okay with 1 gig over LAN.

There's one PC (in a secluded area, where I can only run 1 LAN Cat6 cable directly from the Switch in the Comms room), so when I connect this PC with the LAN cable - all is good and I get 1 gig download, and 1 gig upload)...but now I want to connect another PC at the same site, and when I connect a 4-Port Netgear switch, the speed drops to 100mbps only.

What I have tried already.
2 New Switches
2 New Patch Cables
Also swapped the switch with a working switch (different location) at 1 gig

What am i doing wrong?

You didn't say what model switch you are using.
What do the LEDs on the room switch say? Gigabit to the PCs but 100Mbit to the COMM closet?
But, it could be a "low power" or "green" ethernet switch that doesn't like the marginal cable coming in. Have you re-terminated the long cable from the COMM closet on both ends?

So I will assume the switch has all gigabit ports and you did not do something silly like plug into a 100mbps port.

There likely is a cable issue that some device tolerate better than others. It is more common on long cables. This gets tricky to find can be a single pin in a connector that is not making full contact with the wires.

on the comms cabinet the light on the switch is amber, having said that - the cable when connected to the PC directly gives 1 gig no problem, and yes I have re-terminated the long cable and its giving 1 gig direclty to the PC, but drops down when connected through a 4-port gigabit switch (Netgear GS305)

The GS305 has a number of energy efficiency settings that could be causing your problem. Maybe try a different brand like a TL-SG105.
