Dick read error after copying xp files to my external hdd

Hello,
i use dell inspiron 5010, my fixed hdd was giving error 0148 so i removed it and trying to install windows xp on my wd portable hard drive. after a lot of efforts xp files were copied but when system restart fo complete the set up i ma getting an error "disk read error" i have changed the setting in bios so that windows starts from external usb drive .

A normal XP install will not run from an external drive.
