Difference between 802.11ac and 802.11a/g/n?

Whats the difference between these two and which is better? I'm trying to decide between two very similar laptops, and one of the few differences between them is that one has 802.11a/g/n wifi and the other 802.11ac.

So...whats the difference? Is one better or faster or what?

802.11ac adds some features and some speed but those features and speeds are only available if what you are connecting to provides an 802.11ac signal. Most laptops (probably all) that supports 802.11ac also provide 802.11a/g/n access sot it won't be excluded from an 802.11ac connection but you won't get those added features.
