There are various "core" processors ie core 2 duo, core i5, core i7 etc but even the worst of them are 5 times better than any atom processor. Atom=Very low power & Very low performance & Very low price. Even budget desktop processors that a 7 years old can out do an Atom.

Your question is too vague to know what exactly you are asking. I assume you are asking; What makes the Atom different.
Answer: it consumes only 5.5 watts so it can be used in cheap netbooks, or appliances with the lowest power needs.

In Intel's current lineup all of their CPUs can be used to play modern intensive games (excluding games like Plants vs. Zombies and other crap like that) with varying degrees of success.

All except the Atom.

An Intel Atom is the lowest cpu that Intel makes. They are not very good for anything more that browsing the internet and listening to music. The are mostly found in net books. I think that you should go with the "i" series, if you are looking into a new pc.

That would be "lowest consumer CPU" no? Don't they still make embedded processors like the 8051 family? <googling...> No, not any more! It does look like the Atom holds the place at the low end.

In addition to the netbook, they are useful anywhere low power and not a lot of horsepower are desired. I have one running my NAS. In addition to serving files and, fetching podcasts and managing my backups, It is crunching BOINC/Rosetta work units and may actually crack 200 RAC. 😀
