Different CPUS?

Hi, i was wondering what the other CPU was besides the Pentium line. Also which CPU would be better for building a computer soley comprised of video gaming. I think i heard that the other CPU besides the P4 was better for gaming but i wanna be absolutely positive. Also can someone names some good specs to go along with the cpu? like a good mobo, vid card (thinking 6800gt), ram and what not.

Would there be any complications in putting these 3 together? if so can somebody suggest a better alternative?

NOTE : The setup you chose had a Socket940 MB matched with a Socket939 MB, this would have never worked!

BOXED CPU's comes with Heatsink and Fans. The one provided by AMD is more than enough and it comes with a better warranty on the CPU/Heasink/Fan than OEM version.

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum never heard of this but is it good?

It's a top-notch AMD Socket9393 MB. In most reviews, it's the motherboard of choice with nForce3 250Gb chipset. It has a lot of features/connectors and it performs really well.

By the way, for the GPU, if you really like Doom 3, the GeForce 6800GT will beat any ATI card in the same price range. For Half-Life 2 and FarCry Radeon X800 is better. There is no clear winner with the GPU generation. In the long run you might be better surved with the GeForce 6800GT since it support Shader Model 3.0 and the X800 only support Shader Model 2.0. But, by the time Shader Model 3.0 will be mandatory probably buth GPU will be outdated!

well i'm mostly going to play Counterstrike and online games rather than a single person shooter. So i'm guessing the x800 would be better since it goes better with HL2. Plus with the CPU and the Mobo am i going to need some good ram? cause the review for the mobo says that it wont work with crappy ram, they suggested the corhairs xms series.

Since you will not overclock, you don't need to pay a premium for your RAM.

Boxed and Retail mean it comes in a retail box, with a full warranty, and a cooler (heatsink with fan). These are the ONLY factory-warrantied CPU's.

Actually you would be wasteing money on the X800 Pro over a GT. Why? Because in HL2 Anandtech did a review, the two cards are almost exactly tied!! The difference is less than 1%, and the GT is faster in games like FarCry(1.3) and rules eventhe X800XT in D3. So the GT is faster or at minimum = X800 Pro in every game. Now if you want top 500 dollar range get the X800 XT.

If i were you i`d get an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 939 socket, with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Mobo, with a 2x512 DDR400, and as for the VGA Radeon X800XT, no cash then nVIDIA 6800GT, and make sure it's GT not the Ultra.
and make sure you're getting a powerful power supply specially if you're getting the 6800GT. (Antec trupower 480-550w)

would this work? It says the mobo only needs Supports dual channel DDR 266/333/400, using four 184-pin DDR DIMMs.
Is this ram worth it btw? If not could you suggest a compatible one that is worth the price?

You can find Samsung, Micron, Infenion, Buffalo and Kingston 512 Megs DDR400 for 75$US is many online shop. Any of these brand will work perfectly with your MB. Just avoid getting "unknown-brand" memory module.

You can also check the MSI Support forum, you might see that users get problem with a certain type of memory. But usually gettign one of the brand I have mentionned is good if you don't do EXTREME overclocking.

Now this is all quite expensive, will upgrading be an issue with this? I hear that a new stuff will be coming out january but i'm not sure what, should i wait and see what comes out or just build using these specs?

Within about one month we will start to see PCI-EXPRESS Athlon 64 motherboard on the market and since PCI-EXPRESS will replace AGP 8X these MoBo's will be better value for the long run, some will also support SLI through dual PCI-EXPRESS 8x ports.

And AMD will push a new revision of their 90nm chip that will support SSE3.

So, yes, new stuff is coming, but there is always new stuff coming in the PC market! So get what you can afford right now and upgrade as needed in the future.
