digital out and my graphic cards have hdmis i thought id be able to use those because they show up on the sound devices to though but theyre not working intially they worked one time couldnt get them to work a 2nd time after i went digital out thats attached to mobo

Some GPU cards have built in sound others don't. There are several options. Run digital from onboard to receiver. If your GPU has sound onboard then you have to disable onboard on the motherboard and use the one on your GPU through HDMI. If it is not on the GPU then spdif cable from the onboard to the GPU will allow sound out through HDMI.

That is correct but there is in many cases internal connectors as well. If it is working fine as is (using digital out to receiver) then you are good. Adding an dedicated sound card is optional and disputed, some people claim a noticeable difference in sound quality most people don't but then again it is all based on quality of all components such as speakers, receiver and so on.
