Dimension 2400 pricing opinion

I just by accident saw a refurb as such and think I did good but don't
mind "constructive criticism". Yeah I know if I did bad sorta late
tho supposedly I can still cancel per Dell ( days= ??? )

I'll swap out the hd with a 80gb and cd drive with a dvd burner I have
already. I presume 160gb max hd size in the specs is for the system
without an added controller to see the larger size ??? Just curious.
And I'll add 512 MB ram to this system (see my other post as to where
to buy? )

Does this sound okay (I went with 90 day warrantee since I'll use it a
lot the first week to test it out) :

Intel 2.8GHz with 533MHz FSB
Integrated Audio/ Video/NIC
Microsoft Windows XP Home
128 MB DDR SDRAM at 333MHz
No Floppy Drive (I have one lying around if I want to install)

That's not a bad price with tax included.

Word of caution though, boss - you can't just "add" your floppy drive to
this unit, as there's no FDD cage in which to mount it. Simply, ordering
the floppy means that the mounting cage needed comes in the system. If not,
you'll have to buy the cage from Dell, ebay, or some other place.....about
$20, I think.

( Dell FDD Kit part # M1210 or #2Y692, includes drive, cage, cable and cage
mounting screw. Pre-assembled with drive in cage).

Thanks Stew for the heads up. I'm not really concerned about the
floppy drive nowadays but your info is good to know just in case I
change my mind.

Outa curiousity, can one take a floppy and image it to a cd and run it
from the cd? I'm not sure I understand this tho.

If you're speaking of making a *bootable* CD from a floppy boot disk, then
go here: http://www.bootdisk.com/nero.htm . The page contains info. for
doing so from both Nero and Roxio CD burning ROMs. I've successfully done
this in Nero, but haven't used Roxio to attempt such.

If you're speaking of simply copying files from a floppy disk over to a CD,
then the easiest way (in my opinion) is to insert the diskette, then insert
the blank CD media, wait, cancel the XP wizard for the CD, open "My
Computer", then open the a: drive, right click on the file(s) you wish to
burn to CD, highlight "send to", then select your CDRW/burner. Look for the
"you have files waiting to be written to CD" balloon from your system tray
at bottom right. Click the balloon and follow the prompts.

Bootdisk sounds like what I had in mind.

First, as an alternative to an internally mounted floppy from Dell, USB floppy
drives work just fine. They catch more dust though.

It is not so easy to image a bootable floppy onto a bootable CD, because they
use different boot records. The procedure and software to build all manner of
bootable CDs remains somewhat arcane. A Belgian named Bart has a very technical
web site that addresses the problem of burning bootable CDs. After a tour of
his web site, you may well agree that burning bootable CDs is a black art.
Maybe someone else can provide easier to digest information on this subject?

Or you can get yourself a USB floppy, which will be good on any system
with USB support (I got one for my laptop & it's great).
