I've picked up a used Dimension 4100 (the price was right... free <vbg>).
It has the following configuration:

733Mhz Pentium III
128 MB RAM
NIC in PCI Slot 1
Modem in PCI Slot 5
LiteOn CD-RW
10Gb hard drive

Pretty standard for office use which is what it was used for originally.

I'm planning on replacing the 128MB RAM with 2 sticks of 256MB PC-133 RAM, a
Zip100 drive (I have a few laying around), an SB-Live Value soundcard, an
Adaptec 2906 SCSI card (for a scanner) and a PCI parallel port card (since I
need to have LPT1 and LPT2 available for two printers). My question
involves the best PCI slots to install the additional cards. Right now, I
have 2, 3 and 4 open, Dell default puts the audio card in Slot 4. Does it
matter which slots I put the SCSI card and parallel card in? Is there a
recommended preference? Thanks so much. I got so much help here when I
refurbished a XPS T500 which is working great.

Wow!

How did you get this free?

Got it from my boss (along with a bunch of other older computer equipment)
when he bought himself a newer computer. The XPS T500 only cost me $25, got
that one from a company going out of business.

Don't put a high-bandwidth card (like a SCSI card) into the slot adjacent to
the AGP slot.
Remember the RAM has to be low-density, non-ECC or it won't work (i.e.,
16-chip, 256 MByte - not an 8-chip DIMM).

The NIC card is already in Slot 1 next to the AGP which is Dell's default
setup. I'll leave it there. Thanks for the info and suggestions.

Are you sure - I use the recommended Crucial 256MB CL2 update DIMM which is
high density and has 8 chips.
