display problems

I am currently running the 6600GT card on a 250W PSU. It seems to be running
OK, but I have noticed a few issues. I would like to try to get some help in
identifying the what the solution to the problem is.

1. When playing back videos, especially streaming videos, to me, the image
quality does not seem to be very sharp

2. I have experimented with the video card settings and have encountered
problems while playing games. Specifically, I have used the card for FS 2004
and Rainbox Six 3: Raven Shield. During gameplay in both games, the game
would simply stop as if it was frozen. When trying to get to the task
manager, windows didn't want to display it. After about a minute or so, the
game started to work again as though nothing had happened. This same "game
freeze" would then occur again a few seconds later.

3. Also during gameplay, I was getting small black/white squares on the
screen. I have connected the card to my power supply.

4. Flight Simulator (FS) 2004 has anti-aliasing capability. I have turned
that off and turned that option on using the NVIDIA display properties.
These game freezes seem to be happening when the AA is adjusted.

I have a Dell computer, and as I understand it, I would have to get a power
supply from Dell. The only other one that they have is a 305W. PC power and
cooling has Dell power supplies. According to their system configurator, the
one that would accomodate my system is a 425W selling for about $150.

I want to get into gaming and have a good display with good frame rates,
which is why I got this card. I am not familiar with what all the settings
are for this particular card. Can anyone help me out?

Firstly, get rid of that power supply ond go to your local electronics place
and pick up a quality 400-500W model. It will work in your Dell. I'm prayin'
that you're talkin' Canadian dollars, 'cause $150 is crazy high......

For $75-$100 you can get a nice Ultra, Antec, Sparkle, etc. brand that'll do
you right. Get back to us after playing all your games with the new supply
installed if you're still having probs...

Don't assume that any generic ATX power supply will work on any
particular Dell motherboard. IIRC, some Dells have non-standard power
connectors and (worse) some connectors that appear to be standard have
different wiring within the connector.

If the OP wants to try a generic power supply (a reasonable idea) then
he really needs to KNOW what the pinout is for his mobo power connector
and check that against the off-the-shelf power supply.

There are also some third-party adapters that will fit between the PS
and the mobo. Still, it's necessary to know the specific Dell layout.

You will need a power supply of at least a 350watt rating for a 6600GT. But

It seems that no matter what make 6600GT AGP you have you will have major
lock-up problems. Look at earlier posts - Leadtek, MSI, XFX, Gainward
etc., - they all have same problem. I bought the BFG version - bought a new
power supply to accomodate it. Applied latest bios, latest SIS drivers,
latest Nvidia driver. It seems that with the limited access to my bios that
I have on the Medion MD50000 motherboard (MS-6071) I shall also have to buy
a new motherboard. My advice is don't buy the 6600GT from any manufacturer
until Nvidia can get one working straight out of the box. I cannot find
anywhere where any 6600Gt AGP board manufacturer (including Nvidia) says
that xxxx motherboard is not supported. I have spent so much time on this
problem in the last ten days that I am now way way behind in my work so I
will have to refit my Ti4200 so that I will have a stable working system
once again.

To repeat my advice - don't!

Well, I guess I really didn't know that there were so many problems with
this card. I tried to read up on the posts about this card, but I guess I
missed a few important points about it.

If NVIDIA knows that there are problems with this card, wouldn't they
release updated drivers to fix the problems and to provide support for
certain motherboards?

The power supply from pcpowerandcooling.com is $150 U.S. I wanted to get a
new psu for the computer, but I don't know that I can go to a store and buy
one and hope that it works.

When moving the antialiasing and anisotropic to anything other than 2x, the
games will stop working and image quality will degrade very quickly. To me
this seems to indicate a problem.

I would like to hope that I didn't waste $250 on a video card that simply
does not work.

Antialiasing and Anisotropic should both be left to 'application dependent'
for running 3d games and only selected for some 3d modelling/rendering
programmes.

In the UK a video card that simply does not work costs £200 ($360)! (

Please go over to alt.binaries.comp-graphics. I have posted a screenshot
from the benchmark demo that shows exactly the problems I am having. The
post will be titled "benchmark screenshot"

I guess since I have not yet purchased the benchmark program I can't run
benchmark tests on my own games.

If this is true, then Nvidia should be mocked to oblivion. There's
plenty of people with AGP mobos and if this is a common trend with these
cards, I will once again remove my nVidia parrot sticker off my forehead
and place it over an unopened box of Half Life. Just when I thought
Nvidia started redeeming itself.

Just to be different - I have an Asus 6600GT (AGP) which worked out of the
box without problems. On a 340W powersupply. The only "problem" is that
the rest of the hardware is ancient, so the 6600 is not working very hard.
Running on an Asus a7v266 mobo with an Athlon XP1800+. I am in the
progress of upgrading, old video card broke down, replaced that first,
will buy new mobo/processor next month)...
