Corrected there hasn't been, instead there has been:

Did I dl the movie and watch it, yes! Did I pirate it no. I did not pirate the movie because I didn't copy it and distribute for profit. You don't know if a movie is good until you see it, so to those who go on about such things 'if it's good enough I'll pay to see' DUH! And to those who say it hurts the industry, there hasn't been a single iota of data that supports file sharing is harmful in anyway to the bottomline.

District 9 boxoffice to date:

Domestic: $103,274,000 87.8%
+ Foreign: $14,336,708 12.2%
= Worldwide: $117,610,708

Oh by the way Production Budget: $30 million!

I can't see why anyone would pirate or even purchase this movie. I watched it in a digital theater and had to force myself to not walk out!!! I will grant that the CGI quality was good, but the rest of the film was slow and BORING! The movie was about 2.5 hours and had at most 15 minutes of action. I don't know about you guys, but I don't watch sci-fi for its political commentary or drama potential.

Im pretty sure that the Champions of SciFi, ie Mary Shelly, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells, used SciFi for both political commentary, and Dramatic potential. Im also pretty sure they didnt intend for every SciFi movie to be a vehicle for Vin Diesel or Shia LaBeouf.

Then again your probably asking yourself, "whos Jules Verne".

peckerhead probably thought transformers 2 was a good movie, god that movie had the most retarded and i do mean malformed plot and sequencing.

DO NOT PIRATE THIS!
its a great film that deserves your money, a hell of alot more than most of the cut and paste blockbusters lately. PIRATE THEM INSTEAD, we need to support this kind of film, and idea, where an indy film maker can break through with the help of a veteran director/producer.

If the studio's are tired of their movies being pirated, I for one would pay full ticket price to be able to stream or download the movie and watch it at home, as long as it was high quality. I find going to the theater a pain in the ass, people coming in late, talking or texting during the movie, people bringing babies, etc. It's an expensive hassle. I use to download but I have since stopped, now I just have to wait for it to come to Netflix.

IzzyCraft and sicundercover,

Actually, I am fully aware of who Jules Vern is and you left Heinlein off your list. And no, I don't think either Transformers film was very good (especially #2).

My point is that I expect absolutely all scifi films to have a bit of action. Have any of you read great scifi? It has suspense and action/adventure. This movie had absolutely none of either! Assuming you are even remotely aware of the semi-current events, the plot was painfully obvious with absolutely no suspense or wonder.

many companies go crazy over piracy but with out it some of the popular things today wouldn't be popular.

if a new band comes out, there songs have never been played on the radio (because record labels pay a lot of money to get exclusive deals with radio stations and music tv stations) and they were selling a CD for $15

how many people would buy it when they walk by the cd in the store, (not many)

but what happens if someone pirates it, like s it and plays the song for their friends and others around, then before you know it, that band may have just gained like 50 fans who would go out to buy their album

if you look at many articles on digg and other sites released by smaller bands that became popular like over night, they generally credit it to piracy. some even release their own stuff on torrent sites because of the free advertising.
there have been many bands out there that made multiple albums and never really become popular until 1 day when a few people discover the music on a p2p network, then through word of mouth a lot of people are put onto the band and before you know it, they have become very popular on line and many fans often buy the cd after downloading to support the band, and if not for that, popular bands wind up on online news sites and popular music sites and it is a lot f good advertising and people who hear the music and like it will tell friends.

the same goes for movies especially foreign films

how many times have you seen content or a song or other random stuff that was made in 1 country then through the internet and p2p, spread all over the world and then later on found it's way into a tv show or movie (which pays crazy royalty fees to use the content.

also many people who see movies in theaters will often also download the movies also, so they cant count it as lost sale due to piracy.

companies like the riaa and mpaa like counting pirated downloads as a lost sale, then how do they explain when internet piracy didn't exist, why didn't movies and music back then sell millions more copies compared to the ones now.

PS most anime shows that were bought to America were due to online piracy.

if it weren't for fan subs naruto would have never been licensed and translated for tv stations in the US, when naruto was a new series, it was very popular in japan, then fansub groups started to sub it in English and after some time, you now get well over a million downloads of a episode, companies take notice and then request it be added to their tv station lineup, with out the fan subs the companies who make the anime would have never known that there was a demand for the content in another country, and many companies that make the content aren't willing to go to tv stations in other countries and pay a high fee to have the show evaluated and tested on the network during non prime time hours to see if it gets a lot of viewers, they simply look online and see a few million people in the US trying to get a hold of episodes of the show and they then reach out to the makers of the show and request the show be played on their tv station here.

The movie industry should stop doing regional releases - North America, Asia, etc. Many people (including me) download because there is no legal way to watch the latest movies right away. I'd watch it if it was in the theatres here. Movie hype is worldwide, and just makes people who don't have access to find any means possible.

According to official website they're not planning to release it in India,Asia. I have seen its trailers and read reviews. I dont know how long i would be able to refrain myself from downloading the pirated edition. Moreover, I am sure that I wont be waiting a year for original DVD......

$30 million...

Don't forget the Ben-fer movie that was somehow $54million dollars for 3-4 actors, little special effects... oh, and a crappy movie that made about $6million dollars.

District 9 was a very good movie. I want to see "MOON" - but it has a very LIMITED release schedule that doesn't include my city. 🙁 Heard nothing but great things about it AND I can't see it? Yet we get plenty of CRAP at the theaters like Beverly Hills Chihuahua!? (Guess what? Theres a sequel to that crap coming out!)

I may watched a DL version of D9. I bought it a ticket in theaters and its ON my DVD purchase list. Pretty much any of my friends who SAW the movie, liked or loved it.

BTW: Theater prices are BS expensive. If the THEATERS had HALF a brain, they would reduce the cost by AT least $3 per head. Guess what? I would see 3-4 times as many movies!

And unlike most people, I am not stupid enough to spend $4 for a 24oz cup of sodapop! $7 for pop corn! Talk about gang rape!

I could not wait to see it after seeing the rave reviews so yes, i downloaded it

(the movie premiers in my country in about 2-3 months)
